Night Swim Reviews
There’s something poetic and eerie about Night Swim. It plays a lot on the internal fears of normalcy and domesticity. All this could have been forgiven, however, if not for the major disappointment.

It is a deep shame that, once again, a representation of disability is made without a person with that disability playing the key role.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Jan 13, 2025
Night Swim is a bland entry into the Blumhouse catalogue centered on a haunted swimming pool set on destroying a young family.

Night Swim is a shallow genre exercise that goes in one ear, out the other.

The film doesn’t know what to add to its premise to take the story somewhere that doesn’t feel cliché or overdone.

Imagine the pool scene from Poltergeist stretched to a hundred minutes long... none of it as interesting as the original short... the title would have made more sense to just call it Haunted Swimming Pool.

It’s a full-length goofball horror concoction blending The Natural, Faust, Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Amityville Horror and the swimming-pool game Marco Polo.

A better movie would have placed him at the forefront of a coming-of-age narrative, though I truly can’t figure out how the sensitively conceived Elliot thrived in such a creatively starved and frankly ableist endeavour.

Night Swim's "what if The Shining but in a pool instead of a hotel" premise is too goofy to take seriously and too repetitive and bland to be frightening.

There isn’t anything even half as frightening as my neighborhood pool during the waning weeks of every summer, when the useless HOA has stopped paying for its upkeep and allowed all manner of dead insects and unidentified fungi to blanket the surface.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 12, 2024
Despite 'Night Swim's intriguing concept, its execution falters, leaving audiences more amused than frightened by its poolside horror.
| Original Score: 2.5 | Apr 9, 2024
Night Swim may have worked just fine as a short film back in 2014, but stretched & padded out to feature length, the idea simply drowns, becoming a rather dull & tedious mess that not even the talent of the wonderful Kerry Condon can save.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 8, 2024
Murky and dumb and neither shallow nor deep, and not enough of anything in particular.
| Original Score: C- | Apr 8, 2024
The film’s primary unforced error lies in foregoing anything resembling wit or pathos for the bland tropes of middle-of-the-pack Blumhouse horror films, of which there are, I dunno, several hundred? A million?

There are a lot of missed opportunities that led to laughter for the wrong reasons. This movie has so much untapped potential, and it is a shame it ended up a messy puddle.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 12, 2024
It’s fairly by-the-numbers Blumhouse fare but is also pretty fun and seems to be a crowd pleaser. It won’t make your best of list this year but it’s good for a fun jolt at the movies, which is exactly what we expected here.

Even with a couple of good actors in the lead — including a recent Oscar nominee — there’s not much to get excited about with “Night Swim,” the latest thriller from the powerhouse horror producers Jason Blum and James Wan.

One of those cursed house films, not suitable for those afraid of water. [Full review in Spanish]

The latest Blumhouse release is about as scary as a Babe Ruth candy bar floating in the Bushwood CC swimming pool. Now what was that term Spalding used? Oh yeah, “Doodie!”
| Original Score: 2/4 | Feb 9, 2024
Night Swim ultimately satisfies thanks to the pragmatic creation of characters and conflicts that appeal to the empathy of a 'vanilla' audience. [Full review in Spanish]
