Night's End Reviews

Jan 11, 2024

This is a very cute horror film. It starts off serious, but devolves into some amusing cliches. It's well acted and I enjoyed it for what it was. If you're expecting a serious horror film that's not what this is.

Thankfully this one isn't overly long. A young man moves to a supposedly haunted apartment with the hopes of making money from his ghost hunting vlog. Things get a little dicey and a reknowned expert helps to try and exorcise the spirit. Not exactly scary although the tension ramps up in the final act. Michael Shannon makes a cameo. You could do worse with eighty minutes to kill.

Overall, Night's End begins with a horror and exciting story.  I was highly invested in the film for most of the duration and excited to see this horror film unfold.  I enjoyed the film's lead, Geno Walker, who feels convincing given his new situation.   But sadly, what starts as something serious and enjoyable becomes more wild and goofy by its third act, where plot elements are either missing or are not explained well.  Certain side characters feel out of place and are incorrectly cast, which like the ending, feels either disappointing, cringe-worthy or laughable depending on the viewer.

Night's End is yet another one of the Shudder's low-budget scares. While approaching the haunted house story very realistically, even in the finale the movie maintained this reality, but what happened in the last 5 minutes destroyed all the seriousness. It's not bad, but I can't say that it is worth watching.

Felt too vague, I felt that some explanation and reasoning were needed to take it to the next level, beyond just solid atmosphere and tone.

Before viewing, I didn't read a single review or synopsis, nor did I watch any trailers in order to come in and just see what happens. In other words, I wanted to be surprised and not see an entire movie spoiled in a trailer. The story took a little while to develop. At times, I was a bit confused as to what was going on, but began to piece things together as the film began to wind down. The acting and sound design were both at par level, but the cinematography (also written about below) made up for it. The setting, a mostly dark, somewhat secluded location (apartment building or complex), was fitting for the film as our main character shunned himself from the outside but embraced technology to communicate with others. I wish there was more information for this. Overall, it's worth a watch. Jenifer Reeder is a fantastic director, and I can't wait to see more of her work. Bonus points for casting Michael Shannon and forcing his always-confused look.

i thought it was cringe when it comes to the whole social distancing plot. the acting was kinda meh. I feel like I've seen this before not impressed .

Exactly that. It passes the time. But all the usual hit points of what they WANT you to believe are creepy just fall utterly flat. Meh.

The acting was a little stiff, especially on his friends part. It wasn't a bad movie, but the ending part is the best part of movie.

wtf - did i watch the same movie as everyone else? lol. this was awful. it started off on a good foot, but very shortly you realize both the acting & the dialog is absolutely atrocious. the ending was laughable. I'm so sad that Michael Shannon was in this - although, his character was definitely the best one by far. do not recommend.

Probably the most generic horror I've seen in a while. Absolutely terrible dialogue too. "What was that noise?"… "I accidentally stood on my cat." (Yes that's actually dialogue in the film.) As soon as I saw the occult book I knew he was going to make contact with the author…. Enter the weird guy in a suit with candles behind him. It's generic trash for a brain dead audience. It's something I would expect a child to make. Wow, I'm not sure if the actors are abysmal or if the dialogue they've been given is so atrocious there's nothing they can do. Either way this is painful viewing. Oh and then the obvious exposition dumping is cringe worthy. At the time of this a 67% audience score??? Really??? Have standards really dropped that far??? The only reason I can think is because of the "representation" in the casting. This film is truly awful, and anyone who tells you otherwise must have zero taste in films. Whoever made this should be thoroughly embarrassed.

It got a little bit meh in the middle of the movie but it's definitely worth a watch. The ending was funny, weird, insane and entertaining af.
