Nimona Reviews

Netflix’s Nimona manages to mostly overcome an arduous production history to deliver an incredibly entertaining and moving tale, whilst providing plenty of great LGBTQ+ representation.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 7, 2025

It has fight after battle after skirmish after fight, which is certainly exciting but feels somewhat formulaic. But then, what else could possibly happen in a futuristic medieval kingdom?

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 30, 2024

Its strength lies in the cel shading animation that renders character design and medieval-futuristic settings, but its fantasy is weakened by a simplistic plot that repeatedly falls into the zone of the most generic clichés. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 5/10 | Feb 27, 2024

In its unequivocal and undiluted embrace of the queer experience of “otherness” which lies (barely) beneath its every nuance, it becomes the inclusive, gay-and-trans-affirming parable it was always intended to be.

We never get a real sense of who Nimona is as an individual, beyond the impressions she gives to other people, so that the film comes to rely on the old trope of eliciting sympathy for a monster rather than de-monstering her.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Feb 12, 2024

I think it's the third act's a little weak, but I enjoyed it very much and has got a lot to say.

| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Feb 8, 2024

Its message is powerful but subtle, and I like the animation style a lot.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Feb 8, 2024

With fast-paced storytelling that leads to a moving finale, Nimona celebrates difference and challenges orthodoxy, imparting a lesson that conventions should be questioned and not blindly followed.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 8, 2024

Whippingly fast-paced, chock-full of action sequences and descending almost immediately into the trademark Nimona-level of chaos and destruction, the film is a crisp entertainer.

| Jan 23, 2024

Directors Troy Quane and Nick Bruno seem to instinctively steer towards the staid and expected, which somewhat undermines the supposed themes of inclusion, diversity, and imagination.

| Jan 13, 2024

... confronting the assumptions people make about others and themselves are the most devastating parts of the narrative. This is where the film shines, daring viewers to let Nimona unconditionally into their hearts.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Jan 2, 2024

Netflix’s Nimona is a remarkable delight from beginning to end, with astounding animation and exceptional performances from the entire cast.

The characters of Ballister and Nimona are very vivid and their relationship is what powers this movie. Actions and policies based on fear almost always turn out very badly, and that is the case in this story.

| Original Score: B | Dec 10, 2023

It is an animated film, yes, suitable for children, but -- unlike much children’s entertainment these days -- it isn’t afraid of tackling the heavier stuff, sometimes quite viscerally. It’s all the better for it.

| Dec 6, 2023

Nimona is set to be one of the great films of 2023 for queer representation and positivity. It’s refreshing to see a film that’s more concerned with getting it right than getting it done first.

| Oct 10, 2023

Nimona is the result of thoughtful storytelling that explores the loneliness behind great power. A subtle romance that brings out all the emotions. It subverts all of the fairytale slash fantasy tropes altogether.

| Sep 8, 2023

Nimona is, simply put, one of the best animations of the year and one of the most heart-warming and thematically rich.

| Sep 6, 2023

Nimona is the more prescient queer metaphor than either of the actually gay leads. As a shapeshifter, she avoids conforming- quite literally, she constantly transforms into animals at the slightest excuse. The sheer effort in the animation is remarkable,

| Jul 28, 2023

In its exploration of forced “villainy” and entitlement, Nimona dismantles societal shackles to redefine ourselves AND makes it metal

A very interesting but frustrating film because parts of it are so good... The visuals in the film are so strong they can carry it. I just wish they hadn't talked us to death.
