Nocebo Reviews
Suffering from memory loss and mental breakdown, a woman shows signs of a mysterious illness not recognised or treatable by conventional medicine. The arrival of a domestic carer, a Philippine woman adept of folk remedies, brings hope to the troubled family. The promising mystical aid soon reveals to be an act of revenge for a past tragedy. "Nocebo" is a psychological thriller that uses paranormal elements to examine the exploitation of those who are socially disadvantaged. Despite not being particularly scary, the movie excels in its social commentary on the toxicity of capitalism, especially the parasit relationship between the wealthy and the poor. What goes around comes around!
Um roteiro simples e previsível. Bom trabalho de atuação das protagonistas, uma bela crítica dos problemas de trabalho escravo, vida social e familiar na atualidade. Os efeitos não são tão bons.
There was one scene when the spoon fell, it was such a great introduction of Diana (Filipinos have superstition about utensils, a spoon dropping is a sign that a woman is arriving unexpectedly). I definitely knew this film is gonna be great. Miss Chai, you are so underrated and she played this character very well.
Nocebo: A Predictable and Frustrating Misfire. --- Nocebo is an exercise in wasted potential, and not even the faintest shred of suspense or complexity saves it from being a deeply underwhelming experience. The film teases psychological intrigue and moral ambiguity but delivers a narrative so simplistic and misguided it leaves the audience insulted rather than entertained. --- From the outset, the story unfolds with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, telegraphing every plot point so blatantly that any expectation of a twist—a hallmark of the director’s previous work—is quickly squashed. The result? A film that drags its audience through an excruciatingly obvious narrative with no payoff. You can see the conclusion a mile away, and yet, it arrives without the satisfaction of well-earned resolution or deeper insight. --- Worse still, the moral underpinnings of the story crumble under scrutiny. The central message, ostensibly about exploitation or the misuse of power, is entirely undermined by its own plot mechanics. The “fault” clearly lies with a manager who fails to provide adequate facilities and creates a system destined to collapse under its own flaws—locking doors, monopolizing keys, and ignoring clear signs of deterioration. Yet the film blames everything else but him, skewing its narrative in a way that feels disingenuous and lazy. Instead of critiquing systemic failure, it chooses to moralize about the wrong things, rendering its commentary hollow. --- Add to this the uninspired performances and flat direction, and you’re left with a movie that doesn’t just fail to entertain—it fails to justify its very existence. Nocebo isn’t just bad—it’s frustratingly wrongheaded, offering no twists, no tension, and no truth. Save yourself the time and skip this one.
Besides the main character acts somewhat reasonably senseless in vulnerable emotional state, as we all are, this movie is actually great and has some fine screenwriting like '-will I ever see you again? -no, but you will hear me again'. I think the lovers of the witchcraft subgenre should definitely see this one.
Intriguing horror thriller with an interesting pretext and held together by good performances. Although the plot becomes somewhat clunky as it becomes obvious what's going on, the switching between the UK and Fillipino scenes and some genuinely unsettling tropes make this a great watch.
Interesting and original folklore with cool effects
Overall, "Nocebo" is a thought-provoking and atmospheric thriller that showcases strong performances and a unique premise. It might not cater to everyone's taste, particularly those looking for straightforward horror, but it undoubtedly leaves a lasting impression with its blend of psychological intrigue and cultural commentary. If you're in the mood for a film that challenges your perceptions and keeps you on edge, "Nocebo" is worth the watch.
Even with a pretty predictable plot, some plot holes and slow pace, it's still a fun movie to watch with its cinematography and acting.
Eva Green's performance stands out.
Creepy, dark, breathe of fresh air for horror fans.
Immersive and mystery start, but miss motivations of characters and the finish is ordinary point about terror cheap and pathtic jobs. I didn't understand why vengeance in there.
Took a bit of time till it got interesting, but necessary to explain the overall story. Good movie, with a message behind. Don't ask for 30 T-Shirts a day. haha
There's no mystery, no originality. You know what the whole story is within the first ten minutes. All style, not very good style, and NO substance. I didn't care a whit about anybody. I wasn't moved or weirded out in the slightest. Amateur hour writing.
I really liked this film. I wish they had done more with the husband character though. There were points in the film where it felt like he was being quite controlling, and even diminishing Christine's symptoms. However I felt the question of whether he's just a husband trying to make his wife better, or if there's something sinister about his behaviour, is raised but not answered. Apart from its reliance on stereotypes, this film was interesting and as gripping as you'd want a thriller to be. The concept of the exploited worker getting revenge on the man at the top (in this case, a woman) feels very relevant. Also, I will watch Eva Green in anything <3
Creepy and unique with an amazing and unexpected twist. Diana got her revenge and I'm here for it
It's wonderful how horizons of movie making has expanded. Third world horrors, the poverty inequality and the chaotic depression. Nocebo manifests it's apparitions with true sorrows that makes it mysteriously haunting. Great performances by the whole cast especially Eva and Chai being the centerpieces dueling and adjusting shifts of their characters well. Excellent visuals and special effects picturing hauntings and flashbacks flawlessly. Great work by makeup artists transforming Christine from get go. Unique audio effects and background music that's fitting. Dialogues and interactions are perfect too. Nocebo is definitely a treat for horror movie lovers looking for a change.
How is this in a horror category? I found the story to be very slow and boring on times it was slightly predictable. The acting was ok overall 4/10
Definitely worth a watch! The acting, effects, and atmosphere are amazing. The plot is unique and gripping. Some really unsettling white knuckle sequences. My only complaint is they could have buried the lead a little better - it wasn't crystal clear until the end, but pretty easy to figure out early on. Overall recommend!
A great movie with an amazing plot twist.
