Offseason Reviews
Keating stages an enthralling ghost story about human deterioration, inherited trauma, and grief.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 9, 2024
Offseason is ultimately more about mood than action. Viewers will no doubt feel the strain of Keating’s deliberate pacing and the frustration of his answering questions with even more questions.

The vibe is very Messiah of Evil with some Fulci feels mixed in, and it’s resonant in unexpected ways. It also gets at the very specific kinds of obstinacy that come from Floridian menace and the way the populace responds to it.

Offseason may put audiences off if they can guess the ending in the first ten minutes, but at least it looks good enough so that you can focus on the visuals.

Keating is a master of building up atmosphere and is much more interested in that than in conventional plot mechanics.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 22, 2022
Offseason has thrilling potential, but the predictable storylines deliver a lackluster haunt despite the good cast and cinematography.

'Offseason' is exceptionally confident in the tone it wants to set, but not as much in the story that it desires to tell.

Offseason offers some fun summertime spooks especially for those who love demonic/paranormal horror.

As much as this seaside folk horror tale suffers from Keatings usual foibles, like too many inter-titles and an inert script, theres nonetheless something chilling about its premise.

I've seen everything that inspired the DNA of this horror film. It's just doing it with less, and not very impressively.

A small and occasionally strong thriller. It reminds me of an extended Twilight Zone episode.

It's films like this that disappoint me the most, not because they're awful, but because they had so much potential, so much going for them, and they fall short.

What I'm trying to say is that Offseason introduces a lot of ideas it doesn't land. It does, however, feature a great turn by Donahue, who deserves another film like The House of the Devil. I hope she gets one.

Atmosphere gets one only so far with a movie, and unfortunately it doesnt get us very far with this one.

The setup is fine, but not enough happens to build sufficient steam before our spooky ride is abruptly over.
| Mar 15, 2022
Keating's latest horror outing is ripe with tension, brimming with disturbing visuals, and features another solid performance by Jocelin Donahue.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 13, 2022
It's a genuinely scary piece of work, well-acted and -directed, which takes a relatively simple idea and knocks it out of the park.

Writerdirector Mickey Keating's Offseason is an exercise in shallow, overly familiar atmosphere and very, very little else.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Mar 11, 2022
The short running-time makes a visit to Keatings latest tolerable, but its not a vacation spot you need seek out.
| Original Score: C | Mar 11, 2022
Despite a wonderfully eerie atmosphere, this moody examination of guilt and mourning is too generic to scare and too predictable to surprise.
