Offseason Reviews
This should have been a masterpiece, a real awesome horror movie. The cinematography is gorgeous. The atmosphere is really interesting, mysterious and weird. Also, the acting is very good. But I'm sorry to say that the last part of the movie is so cliché, that it ends up to be a real disappointment. What a shame.
It’s a slow slog that just never pays off. It’s one of those where I immediately check Reddit for “Ending explained” and nope, it’s not deeper than I thought. Just over.
Worth a watch for the atmosphere. A couple of shots like the bar scene will stick with you. Someone else mentioned Silent Hill and that popped into my mind watching as well. Don't expect some great story or twist you don't see coming, but a very well done little film given the material.
Creepier than I was expecting. Very creatively written of what is essentially a difficult story to tell. Worth sticking it out.
Ótima atmosfera e excelente suspense e algumas atuações realmente notáveis.
Made it about 10 minutes in and gave up. I won't spoil it but if you make it further, let me know if it was 83 minutes well spent. Looks great, lead actress is convincing and the feel is spooky. But I can get that from a lot of movies that actually deliver much sooner. Slow burns I get, but don't have me waiting around and you, like the leading actress, are just wandering in the mist and woods like "anybody?" " are you here?" Not after I finish this review.
It seems like Michael Keating is trying to wear too many hats. He shouldn't be writing movies, but he can sure shoot the hell out of them. Watching this there's a great disconnect between the terrible, formulaic, and frustrating plot (even for a horror movie, I kept yelling "why are you doing this?" far too many times,) and the brilliantly atmospheric way it was shot. If it happens to come up on your "showing next" while streaming (this is how it got me), and you accidentally get into it, might as well see the end, but you know most of what is going to happen after one of the exposition dumps about halfway through (and you can guess well before that.) I can't recommend watching this when there are so many better things.
Overall, apart from an interesting yet basic mystery and some fun creative moments visually, Offseason is a massive disappointment as a horror film. With a slow pace and characters just walking around having random moments for the vast majority of the runtime, the film fails to deliver any real impact or excitement. Characters are unlikeable, and the dialogue feels unfitting and far too challenging to accept. Plus, the character choices are poor and exhausting to watch. In the end, I'm saddened to say I found this film unrewarding, unrealistic, painfully dull and forgettable.
I think everyone was a little hard on this one. It wasn't that bad. Decent photography and acting. It is kind of ghost story/pact with the devil deal. Not great either though. The movie had a Carnival of Souls feel, but in color with some other stuff thrown in. It passed the time.
A couple travel to a seaside island town to fulfill the dying wish of her mother to not be buried there. I can see why, the weather is inclement, the residents are kooky and it's filled with ghosts. Unfortunately it's also mostly dull. I will say they nailed the tone and atmosphere, just the story didn't reel me in.
The movie presents stunning atmosphere and visuals, reinforced by the isolation of the island and its creepy inhabitants. The script is, however, dull and sometimes even feels weird. A cursed island 😃 A cursed script 😒
Don't go out at night for the weird Cthulu looking monster may get you if the villagers don't bore you to death first, the movie is too abstract and suffers because of it, great cinematograpy is the only decent thing this movie has going for it.
‘Offseason' Offers Mild Thrills Amidst a Thin Narrative
A slow movie, and a slower protagonist. That really dragged on. Not scary, just a mildly spooky atmosphere. Wish I didn't watch it.
One of the rare occasions where my opinion falls into the RT users consensus. This movie is poorly edited to the point where it seems like it was rushed to get out for whatever reason. The movie literally cuts from rain/storm to completely dry, from day to night in a matter of seconds, from a scene in the woods to a scene on the beach, like literally instantly cuts from one to the other. From a story standpoint, it's been done before…there's a 70s movie very similar about an island of people who are doomed to stay on the island because of a curse and so visitors have to leave before a certain time of the year. Anyway, the acting isn't the problem here…some of it is well done. The problem is the same most current movies suffer from: bad story = bad movie. It's as simple as that. And the editing was horrible. Visually it's kind of creepy and it works but beyond that, it's a mess of how the story rolls out, the chapters motif is ineffective, the story bounces back and forth in a way that doesn't work. I know it seems like I'm being hypercritical but that's literally what i do: I watch movies and point out their flaws openly and honestly without any bias. I'd say at this point, i hate most movies equally because let's face it: most of them absolutely suck. They're vehicles for either ego or profit at this point and neither of those serve the art of storytelling very well. I kind of miss the invisible line that used to exist that made it so difficult to get a movie made. These days the only prerequisite is that you're born to rich parents and that hasn't produced many good results either.
