Onward Reviews

To be honest it is kind of unexpected that Pixar would deliver a film that seems to have a Gothic edge while embracing the quirkiness of a film like Planet 51, but they have and it works wonderfully well.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 29, 2024

…Onward is a very neat little animation that skews towards teens rather than kids, and pushes the Pixar envelope in an unexpectedly serious direction…

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 5, 2024

The idea of magic being mostly faded away by technology is good, but it never really takes that much advantage of that idea.

| Original Score: 6.5/10 | Jul 12, 2024

It has an entertaining start that finds its point in the solid animation and dubbing work, but, unlike other works from the Pixar, its urban fantasy adventure loses the magic and sense of fun along the same generic routes. [Full review in Spanish]

lacks the very same ingredient its characters are trying to find.

Boasting a talented voice cast, the two brothers go on a fun, quest-based adventure that concludes with a wonderful, heartfelt message to every family out there. Hilarious, clever humor, compelling main characters (...) and gorgeous animation as always.

Destined to become a great children's classic... well-directed and balanced. [Full review in Spanish]

Given that film is focused on the bonds between father and son, those with strong connections or have lost a family member will be captivated, but for others, they may find it lackluster.

| Original Score: 6.5/10 | Apr 12, 2023

For better or worse, Disney and Pixar have redefined the genre of cinematic animation, but as their outsized influence has faded, their grip on the title of most inventive seems to be slipping from their grip.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Nov 26, 2022

Onward is a sweetly funny and engrossing animated adventure about the nature of fathers and sons.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 27, 2022

Onward tackles grief, loss, and emptiness head-on. This is a film that will truly entertain your young ones, but I have no doubt it will move you as well. Bring the tissues.

| Original Score: 8/10 | May 20, 2022

Onward has its issues and pacing problems, but once it gets out of the first act, this journey about the bond of brotherhood is on par with some of Pixar's best.

| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Apr 4, 2022

Scanlon has a wicked sense of humor, and his version of happily ever after is part of the draw here.

As ever, Pixar employs ironies and reference material that has a way of playing better with adults.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 21, 2022

This film is full of heart, magic, and whimsy that Ian and Barley would love the audience to embody in their everyday lives.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 18, 2022

Onward is a decently enjoyable feature that does make the most out of its uninterestingly boring concept.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Feb 16, 2022

A really sweet ode to [Dungeons and Dragons] lovers.

Smartly keeps its focus on the dynamic between the two brothers, which carries the film through.

| Original Score: 3.5 / 5 | Jun 25, 2021

Although this is a film about a son seeking a relationship with his father, it also recognizes those in our lives who unexpectedly became a father figure and shaped us into the person we are today.

| Original Score: A+ | Jun 23, 2021

The world-building is spare to the point of obtuseness, which is saying something considering this is the same studio that gave us a believable world inhabited only by cars.
