Onward Reviews

I have nothing bad to say about this movie, but nothing good to say about it either.

A good hearted movie about brothers is hard to come by. No love interests so it is good for everyone to enjoy. The main character grows on the journey and finds the confidence that he needed, that his brother knew he had, and helped him see who he could be. The family was relatable, even down to the moms boyfriend. The main character isn't over powered and learns while going on the journey and isn't the strongest character at the end either, he still needs help from his family. You see family drama laid out in a family friendly way and a bond that brothers have displayed in a healthy way. The characters are funny and the movie is easily re-watchable even for my significant other who doesn't like re-watching movies.

If covid didn't exist, this movie would've been a huge hit! It's everything you'd expect from a Pixar classic; creative world building, loveable characters, and of course you'll need tissues for your quest. Just when you don't think the ending can be anymore encouraging, boom, you get the uplifting Brandy Carlisle song. This is a painfully underrated Pixar masterpiece, and one of their most epic!!

Baddest Pixar movie ever exist, it's worse than Finding Dory and Toy Story 4

It's not groundbreaking like Pixar's best, but far from the worst. It has a talented voice cast and great animation while still finding a way to tug at your heartstrings. Plus it has a nice appeal to the fantasy genre lovers out there.

"Onward" was the one of the last films released in theatres before the COVID pandemic. It was not one of the Pixar films that went straight to Disney+, but due to its low box office success it is often grouped with "Soul", "Luca" and "Turning Red". It is directed by Dan Scanlon, the same director of Pixar's "Monster's University". The movie stars the two biggest stars of the time, Chris Pratt and Tom Holland. They both do fine, but I can't help but feel that they were picked more for their name recognition than for their voice acting talent. Starting with the positives, in typical Pixar fashion, the animation is good. The core dynamic of the two brothers bonding is sweet. Their quest to spend more time with their father is immediately relatable. The smaller moments of the story, where the characters are just hanging out, are very endearing. The characters are both flawed in their own way, but they are endearing. The mother is involved in the story more than most Disney films. The reason they give for not just including the mom in the story is very contrived. The fantasy technology hybrid world is not all the novel nor interesting. There is potential in the world, but there are things that just don't add up. It does this world better than the movie "Bright", but it still isn't great. A lot of what they do, does not capitalize on their setting. It is just a standard story but with a coat of neo fantasy paint. The ending has an unnecessary forced conflict between our two leads. It leads to some sweet moments, but at the cost of story flow. The final resolution also feels forced. Like the writers knew they wanted it to happen but didn't know how to make it happen. Where it isn't Pixar's best, it is still not a bad flick. If you saw the teaser and think the film might be fun, you would probably have a fine time with it. It may not be fantastic or magical, but it's decent.

A nice movie, a giant heart. But when the brothers go for an adventure the adventure is boring and it isnt good vary much but the characters are great and the end is so excited.

Loved this movie. I had no idea just how much I was smiling throughout. It definitely is made for teens and adults. It portrayed the sometimes difficult role of an older sibling when a parent is missing. Warmed my heart and made me think of my childhood. A wonderful tale of family, love and a little bit of magic.

An enjoyable and enriching movie with splendid voice work and a lot of well-handled emotional scenes, Onward may not reach the heights of some Pixar movies with some elements feeling a bit uneven or weirdly incorporated, but this is still filled with charm and a fitting adventurous feel which only fuels the obviously stellar animation on display.

Disney and Pixar have a remarkable knack for creating extraordinary films. While not every project has been a resounding success, their original stories often shine brightly, and "Onward" is no exception. The film follows the journey of two brothers, Ian and Barley, who set off on an adventure to reconnect with their deceased father. The story delves deeply into their sibling bond as they seek to make the most of a magical opportunity. Barley, the older brother voiced by Chris Pratt, is an enthusiast of a mythical board game, which serves as a backdrop for their quest. As they navigate their magical world, they encounter various challenges and characters, all leading to a pivotal moment where they finally get to meet their father—albeit only from the waist down. This awkward yet heartfelt moment allows Ian, voiced by Tom Holland, to experience a connection with a father he never knew, even if it's fleeting. The film is brimming with enchanting magic, humor, and a vibrant cast of characters, featuring talented voice actors like Octavia Spencer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. With pixie bikers, a flying lion-dragon-scorpion creature, and the formidable manticore, the film creates a stunningly imaginative universe. Unfortunately, "Onward" faced challenges upon its release during the pandemic, resulting in underwhelming box office performance—one of the few Pixar films to struggle in theaters. It seems unjust for Disney to judge its success based on these circumstances. Now that we are moving past the pandemic and strikes, there is a strong case for giving "Onward" a second chance to shine and reach the audience it truly deserves.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie! I didn't expect to have myself crying by the end of it, but the moral of it was very heart-touching and the relationship between the two brothers and their journey together was fun to watch!

Onward Is So Underrated, I was just completely blown away when I watched it in the cinema. The ending was emotionally brilliant. The writing was tight- everything led to something.

Here's a revised film review: Excellent! This animated film takes viewers on a heartfelt journey, emphasizing the recognition of the truly important people in our lives. It masterfully weaves in fantasy elements that remind us of the wonder we've lost in the modern world.

Two brothers set out on a quest to finish a spell that will allow them to see their deceased father one more day. This film is a bit of a slow burn, but the payoff at the end is really well done and satisfying. Pixar, once again, pulls out all the stops for the animation in this film with some gritty realism backdrop against a more cartoonish character design. While that might sound weird, it works well within the story. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland work well as the brothers. The other stand out in the voice acting is Octavia Spencer as The Manticore. Highly recommended movie, go check it out!
