Ordinary Angels Reviews
An overly sentimental faith-based drama about ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help others. Considering the genre and its audience, it's a little more than just passable.

An inspiring true story about a woman who practices two kinds of charity.

Ordinary Angels is a nice, tearjerky cornball drama that mostly feels like a reasonable, if slightly heightened, depiction of real life.

In many ways, Ordinary Angels is the kind of faith-based film that should be seen as a how-to guide on promoting good Christian values without alienating or demonising non-religious audiences.

A hairdresser looking for salvation and a gruff father with a sick daughter make for positive messages and positive people

It mostly succeeds.

“Ordinary Angels” is proof that events that are real don’t necessarily feel real when put up on screen, and that can make all the difference.

Not an extraordinary miracle of cinema, but it's an effective, emotional feel good movie with positive messages. [Full Review in Spanish]

While this film strains a bit to depict the most inspirational version of a true story, it thankfully avoids sentimentality due to grounded storytelling and nicely nuanced performances.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 30, 2024
The drama is pretty pedestrian; the storytelling is wantonly manipulative, and I have to say that I was manipulated against my better judgment.

It's billed as a 'faith-based' film, which usually means saccharine or maudlin, but Swank gives it a measure of credibility.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 27, 2024
The film’s more overtly Christian elements, including calls for divine intervention, dovetail neatly with Sharon’s yearning to be held, supported and, ultimately, forgiven.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 26, 2024
The performances are solid and the story is touching — and perhaps that will carry this to its chosen audience. But it's a little flat for true drama.

Taken on its own terms as an old-fashioned character drama and showcase for Ritchson as a dramatic actor (he’s genuinely really good), it does the job it set out to do.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 23, 2024
Despite a strong performance from Alan Ritchson, Ordinary Angels' chaotic editing style makes the film hard to connect with.

On the other hand, although the approach to things may be too simplistic, the double Oscar winner Hilary Swank holds the entire scaffolding with her excellent performance. [Full review in Spanish]

If you want a better made version of a faith-based film, this could serve as that.

I gather that, because it was based on a true story, the script didn't feel the need to explain why any of these character motivations made any sense.

Blasting into the picture at about the 20-minute mark like she's auditioning for a remake of Erin Brockovich and nothing is going to get in her way. Swank grasps this by the scruff and just keeps shaking until it starts to look like a watchable film.

It is nice to see films with positive messages and director Joe Gunn milks every tear he can.
