Ordinary Angels Reviews
The drama is pretty pedestrian; the storytelling is wantonly manipulative, and I have to say that I was manipulated against my better judgment.

The film’s more overtly Christian elements, including calls for divine intervention, dovetail neatly with Sharon’s yearning to be held, supported and, ultimately, forgiven.

The performances are solid and the story is touching — and perhaps that will carry this to its chosen audience. But it's a little flat for true drama.

Taken on its own terms as an old-fashioned character drama and showcase for Ritchson as a dramatic actor (he’s genuinely really good), it does the job it set out to do.

On the other hand, although the approach to things may be too simplistic, the double Oscar winner Hilary Swank holds the entire scaffolding with her excellent performance. [Full review in Spanish]

If you want a better made version of a faith-based film, this could serve as that.

Ordinary Angels takes the faith-based melodrama and injects it with the kind of empathetic energy that could wring tears from even the most godless among us.

The dialogue is as simple as mud, but you can’t ignore the value of a film that finally makes you feel good about the world.

The character’s motivations don’t gel and no amount of Swank moxie can make it work.

I can’t think of a single plot development that will surprise you and sometimes that’s OK. Sometimes it’s enough to sit back and settle in for a Comfort Viewing Movie...

Ordinary Angels is a true story and a remarkable one at that. Living with our two-year old granddaughter has made me especially vulnerable to dramas about young children in peril, and it didn’t take long for this one to open my tear ducts

Just because we know where a movie is going does not mean we don’t enjoy getting there.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 23, 2024
This is unambiguously a faith-based film, but it’s one that places its faith in people instead of a higher power. That doesn’t make it good, but it does make it an interesting change of pace.

Luckily Swank is on hand, almost singlehandedly raising the material to a level that keeps you wanting to watch. And sometimes, for a good cry at the movies, that’s really all you need.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Feb 23, 2024
Despite its bona fides, the movie's narrative and characterizations practically gorge on clichés.

No magic tricks, no ulterior motives, just the strength of people working together toward a common goal. It doesn't always happen like that, but "Ordinary Angels" is a gentle reminder that it sure is nice when it does.

“Ordinary Angels” has some of the feeling of an after school special, because it’s a heartwarming movie in which everybody is nice. But it’s more well-made than most.

A do-good story about two lost souls who learn to understand and appreciate each other while the community around them comes together to achieve something that goes beyond their individual needs. This one earns its wings.

This film starring Hilary Swank as a Kentucky hairdresser who rallies her community on behalf of a widower and his seriously ill three-year-old daughter proves irresistible with its powerful feel-good story.

What lifts the picture beyond average inspirational fluff is the way director Jon Gunn and company control the slow release of its sweetness so as not to overpower. Even cynics will be won over by the human kindness on display.
