Overboard Reviews

Hawn and Russell make a cute couple, and Overboard has a fair amount of charm. Like a lot of movies these days, it takes this one too long to end, but up until the last 20 minutes or so, it is a moderately entertaining, old-fashioned formula comedy.

This popular piece of piffle from director Garry Marshall (who made his career in piffle) mainly stays afloat thanks to the presence of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

...a bizarre setup that's employed to mostly watchable and genial effect...

It's fairly commonplace in '80s comedies to design stories that can't end believably, but this setup has a particularly nerve-wracking pace.

Overboard gives the impression of an all too familiar movie. [Full Review in Spanish]

The whole film comes off as an unfunny, nightmarish anti-feminist version of The Taming of the Shrew.

God bless us all. And send us better films next week.

Despite the ickiness of the conceit, it manages to be a fairly innocent good time, weird as it sounds. It's a movie likely destined for a fate not unlike its predecessor, a lengthy turn as a "nothing else is on" go-to.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 7, 2019

Harmless enough, however shabbily made.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 14, 2018

A modest romantic comedy, filled with large plot holes, pointless life lessons and silly dialogue.

Why [Kurt Russell] wouldn`t simply leave [Goldie Hawn] alone is just one of the film`s flaws.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Aug 23, 2017

Solid, fun entertainment that continued to show an appreciative public that Hawn was more than a ditzy blonde.

Marshall's sunny, sitcomedic comedies tend to be kinda bad but also compulsively watchable, and this one's no exception... [Blu-ray]

| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 4, 2011

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are truly the only reasons to keep watching this otherwise flaccid comedy, which feels static when it should zing and oppressive when it should soar.

'80s comedy has some iffy stuff for PG; won't interest kids.

Kurt Russell abuses Goldie Hawn into becoming a better, more caring woman? Who thinks this stuff is funny? Lots of people, unfortunately.

A good screwball comedy.
