Paint Reviews

The storytelling was lacking. I was confused. Was he a womanizer or a tease? Just how was it that he hurt everyone around him? The Bob Ross imitation was spot on, but why exactly was that done? If I were a member of Ross' family, I would sue them. I actually watched the movie because I thought that it was about him.

My kind of movie.....

The movie starts with an interesting premise but quickly depends into a complete bore fest full of political tropes that just make you want to roll your eyes. Give this a miss there's plenty other movies out there to occupy your time.

Owen Wilson understated tour de force performance. If you liked Animal House, you'll like this. Cult classic. The wig gets an academy award.

Another bomb by Owen Wilbomb. Why does anyone think he can act?

Redefines quirky. But I loved it. If you’re a fan of non-formulaic movies and your soul needs a bit of a rest then this one’s for you.

Paint is a dry and tepid, slow and shallow, and proves only one thing. Art is boring... until you light it on fire.

Carl performed his own parody, yet Paint comes nowhere close. Though I couldn't watch the entire length, I get the feeling it would've been better suited as a tragedy than a comedy.

I love Owen Wilson but not in this. I was so bored my mind wandered all the way through it. 🥱

I really wanted to like this film. It has many of the elements of a quirky film I'd often like: a unique, off-beat concept, actors I like, a little bizarreness.... But I just felt it was a bit weak. The elements didn't really gel. And some of the bizarreness was just... a bit *too* bizarre. Like everyone always looking the same age, even in flashbacks. I get that that might have been done on purpose to add to the wackiness of the concept. But... I don't know.... It just didn't work for me.

I really liked it. Owen Wilson did a great job, everything else was well done.

This is a cult classic! Don’t pay attention to the negative reviews. This isn’t a story about Bob Ross but it does get some inspiration from the legend. This a classic love story wrapped in some over the top Vermont cultural cliches. The is the best van character placement since Uncle Rico’s rig. Pour yourself a tasty beverage and sit back and enjoy!

Not a masterpiece certainly, but a fair stab at quiet humor. This movie plays like it's Canadian with gentle humor versus raucous belly laughs. Forget the Bob Ross parallels and revel in the insecurities of Carl Nargle.

Dumb and manipulative. My real problem with this movie is that it intentionally tricks the audience into thinking this is a movie about Bob Ross and it's not. They did not get permission to use Bob Ross's likeness nor did they give him any of the revenue. They are like "oh, it's not Bob Ross"... yeah, it's just about ANOTHER painter in that time period with the same signature hair, way of speaking /dressing that also painted landscapes at PBS. It was a dumb concept with bad execution and I guarantee you that 9 out of 10 people that watched it assumed it had something to do with Bob Ross. You shouldn't be allowed to do that.

Okay - before you watch PAINT please understand two things... One, it's not a movie about painter Bob Ross, although the lead character is obviously inspired by Bob Ross. I know some people will be angry and write reviews based on that - please take those comments in context. Two, this is not a "funny" movie - it is more of a "drole" movie that (I believe) American audiences may not find particularly entertaining. It's slow-moving with subdued comedy and it kinda pokes fun at itself - I think. I was entertained by the character of Carl Nargle. But his motivations could have been hinted at earlier in the story. The film is slowly paced and probably could have used another round with the editor. The camerawork and direction could have been a bit more quirky, like the lead character. Most of the shots are wide/flat and the supporting actors (like the love interest) aren't given as much to work with, which brings it down a notch. Reviews mention Wes Anderson and maybe a hint of his style would not be unwelcome here. I feel that the setup of PAINT is part of its own downfall, as it will never live up to the whimsy imparted in the trailer. You get an impression (pun intended) of who the lead is, but when you view the work as a whole you are given something else. It seems like the writer had a beginning and an ending but didn't understand how to fill in the middle. That being said, I will remember the name of Carl Nargle - and I hope he is doing well.

Just finished streaming this on Hulu. Well, it's not for everyone. It's odd, made me laugh often and be uncomfortable the whole movie. I did go to art school and never watched Bob Ross's show on PBS. Depends on your background how you will either enjoy or dislike this film. If you love action films, this is not for you.

A special movie that'll(maybe) make you laugh.

This movie was not worthy of Owen Wilson nor was it even close to a bio about Bob Ross, which would have at least been interesting. It's quirky in a boring way. Hard to figure out the plot if there is one. It's just not funny if meant to be a comedy. If it's not about Ross, ditch the stupid Afro, and maybe the movie would not be so disappointing. I would be appreciative to have seen an actual Bob Ross storyline. Don't waste your time. It's a stinker.

The joke at the end describes it pretty well. He has everything to make her laugh, but he doesn't know how to finish it off.

The story is not well written for this fictional documentary. Owen Wilson does not feature his funniest comical moments, but it has it moments of humor. The plot does not reveal anything all that fun throughout. Don't stress if you don't have time to catch this one. I've already spent too much writing this review.
