The Phantom of the Opera Reviews

Mar 27, 2025

The acting and singing were amazing! Emmy and Gerard were very impressive and it really embodies the musical;while changing the dances minimally. Absolutely my favorite musical I've probably seen this movie over 100 times.

Just over 20 years old now. Wow. Love it! I loved the musical in the theatre and I loved the movie. Excellent casting and excellent music. I was initially not impressed at all by the casting of Butler and Driver, however, both proved me wrong. This is my second favorite Lloyd Webber after my number one all time favorite, Jesus Christ Superstar. The scores of the paid critics as always, show their lack of taste and intelligence in film.

A good movie with good performances and great music

The movie is a solid 3/5 stars, however, the songs and voices carry the movie. Spectacular soundtrack. Slightly above average movie.

It was obviously good but unfortunately, people were right: the stage version is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY better. The movie is beautiful but the sets on stage blew me away. Some tiny changes just seemed so odd. Christine recognizing Raoul first irritated me a bit, they cut bits from the Phantom of the Opera song (IT'S THE TITULAR SONG), there's a weird sword fighting scene? Actually, so many swords in this movie and for what? However, I liked Emmy Rossum as Christine. She's a great actress and I loved her singing (Sierra is still that girl though). For some reason I couldn't vibe with Patrick Wilson's Raoul even though I liked Fraser's Raoul. Now Phantom... Gerard Butler's voice isn't bad at all but they completely softened some of my favourite Phantom's singing parts and that was so disappointing. I love Ramin's franticness as the Phantom, he's so unhinged and his voice is so powerful and commanding but Butler's voice just wasn't.

This movie is watchable if you have never seen the stage show and have no access to it. The story is mostly correct, despite the glaring plot hole that a 16 year old soprano would never be given the opportunity to sing in that era of French opera. The cast seems to have been chosen in order to pull in viewers and not because they are the best fit for the role. I implore anyone who watches this movie to book tickets to see it live, it will change your life.

4.35. The story is remarkable -- it's not as good as the music, but that's not the story's fault. Also, a couple of sets are incredible.

Most stunning and outstanding movie. I am currently hyper fixating on this topic. The music is beautiful. Most grossing movie ever made. I hate to compare to wicked but the casting was better than wicked. The vocals and acting were just better. I recommend 100%. Everyone else reviewing this is absolutely insane. My nee favorite

MICHAEL DECLARES An absolutely astounding, even astonishing theatrical triumph! The captivating beauty and the sheer perfection of this film is not to be missed. Phantom of the Opera is perhaps the greatest musical of the last 100 years.

Hands down favorite broadway musical and actually love the movie better! The last time I saw it in NYC was wonderful but it didn’t have Gerry so it couldn’t compete. I would swoon right in front of Gerard Butler with no shame.

It's a good adaptation of the stage show. I have watched it several times and it never fails to amaze me. Opposite of some phans opinion, i quite liked Gerard Butler in the role of Phantom and he didn't screw up Music of the Night. My favourite adaptation is of course Carlotta's. Minnie Driver's performance and accent makes me laugh every single time. "Gimme my doggy!" Hehe. This is for all the people who didn't like the movie and thinks they screw up. There's a video on YouTube by Prying Pandora Productions named Restaged Tour Sucks. After watching it, you'll love the movie. Sit back and enjoy, phans.

This is the sexy version. Instead of a horror story about a ghoulish psychopath, this adaptation delivers a tale of nonconformity and inner beauty that will make you yell that Christine chose the wrong man. Critics rate this lowly because they're jealous of the Phantom's burning magnetism.

Having watched the Royal Albert Hall version, I find the quality of singing in this cinematic production to be inadequate. And the chemistry between the leads is lacking. I understand they edited the story for time, but, I think they expanded scenes that could have been eliminated and eliminated scenes that should have been kept. This is not terrible, but the filmed stage play is far superior.

Still one of my favorite movies and it got me to want to see the musical, so I went when I was 13. I don't know why it's rated so low. This story is a true tragedy of what it's like for a person to live without love and why kindness is so important, even to those who are different and who we don't understand.

Absolutely fantastic film, watched it so many times, really gets the feel of the vulnerability behind the figure of the phantom

Where to begin an absolute masterpiece beautiful film. Feels like the stage show has come to the comfort of your own home. A stacked cast that each one is perfect Emmy Rossum a beautiful Christine and Gerard Butler a phenomenal phantom and and so much more The Music is astounding and really enjoyable the dancing amazing and vocal work astounding You will love every moment from beginning till the end 100000/5 an absolute must see Beautiful, heartfelt, enchanting, magical, phenomenal

I prefer the film over live. In this case the film has so much more depth of emotion and character than the play versions ever do (I've seen it off Broadway twice). Gerard Butler does an amazing job as the Phantom.

The movie Phantom of the Opera transported me to another world. The casting—perfection. Visually stunning. The music, the performances and singing sublime. The seductive charisma of Gerard Butler as the phantom had me silently yearning. You are pulled into the story and the emotions brought forth will sweep you away. When the film was over the entire theater audience stood up and cheered and clapped in awe. A must see.

How can I come up with enough words to describe this amazimg movie? Beyond it being one of my all time favorites, the music and cinamatography take you right into the world of The Phantom. The costumes are nothing short of astounding, the storyline will take you through a wide range of emotions, it will make you want to sing and dance,it will make you cry, it will make you fall in love and feel the envy over that love all within moments. This movie keeps a hold on you through every twist in turn, keeping you present and engaged. This will always be a favorite of mine.

There are some films which have a scene that makes you rethink your decision to watch. The second that Christine got in the underground boat with the Phantom, I was mentally checked out. I can appreciate the dramatic and artistic nature of this movie, but it was a little too over-the-top to keep my interest. With songs twice as long as I would like (i.e., Down Once More), and unnecessary scenes with dull and redundant themes (i.e., the graveyard), this film was a bit of a drag. Raoul is a beast and The Music of the Night is a banger, but other than that, the movie is bottom tier musical cinema. Additional Note: Phantom of the Megaplex > Phantom of the Opera
