Piggy Reviews
While this intelligent Spanish slasher gleefully sloshes on the high-tension splatter, it also delights in inverting generic tropes, dishing up a lip-smacking level of moral complexity.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 18, 2023
There’s an atmospheric, unsavoury oiliness to the cinematography and an uncomfortable tussle of sympathies – director Carlota Pereda shows real promise as a genre film-maker.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 8, 2023
Piggy presumably aims to test our sympathies, but just forfeits them entirely, in the service of a facile plot and a heroine even the film itself can’t seem to stand.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 5, 2023
The slasher style, small-town naturalism and nods to 70s horror are quite memorable.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 5, 2023
Galán is... a delight to watch, a rare instance where an actor accurately conjures up the fidgety confusion of a young girl.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 19, 2022
Desperation can make anyone kind. That’s one takeaway from Piggy. Another is that Galán is an actor worth keeping an eye on, a very canny choice for a movie so poised to walk tonal tightropes, drifting between misery and humor, shame and shamelessness.

Part coming-of-age romance, part psychological body horror, “Piggy” firmly establishes Pereda as a bold new voice in feminist horror.

A very strong film that manages to meld more than one genre.
| Oct 14, 2022
A masterful mix of dark comedy, social commentary and raw suspense.

...this is not a film in the business of offering comfort. It bleakly suggests that we’re on our own, and maybe need the push that a glimpse at the alternative provides.
| Oct 11, 2022
A slight parable about having a corrosive hate in one’s heart.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 7, 2022
Throughout, writer-director Carlota Pereda announces herself as a skilled manipulator of audience sympathies.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 6, 2022
Fascinatingly human as it is morally squirm-inducing.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 6, 2022
Pereda carefully sets up our expectations only to subvert them.
| Oct 6, 2022
A gory slasher film... also gutsy, exposing how excessive bullying can lead to unforeseen consequences for the tormentors.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 5, 2022
There’s nothing patronizing or moralizing about Piggy, and it’s all the better for it; simultaneously a strong character portrait and a twisted coming-of-age film, this is tough but satisfying viewing.
| Aug 18, 2022
A meditation on the banality of horrible people, Piggy is an instant horror classic.
| Feb 4, 2022
Pereda fashions a startling character study that veers into grand questions around morality, dejection, revenge, and justice, but one that smartly refuses to deliver easy answers.

Whatever quibbles one may have with the director's construction of the character, what's not up for debate is how astonishingly committed Galán is to the brutal physicality of the role.
| Original Score: B- | Jan 29, 2022
Galán's intensely anguished performance, eyes wide and body heaving with exhaustion, often feels like it's running on adrenaline.
