Pompeii Reviews
One of the greatest cinematic achievements of the 21st century.

A disaster movie with romantic appeal, with tragedy, like Titanic (1997), but more Balkan and action-oriented. Oh. And there's a gladiators sub-plot... [Full review in Spanish]

Its blunders are aplenty and it’s impossible to take anything the film does seriously.

Why, when an estimated 16,000 lives were lost when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, does Pompeii tell a story about the least interesting of them?

By the time the credits started to roll I felt that bad guy Graecus was speaking directly to me when he said, "You dragged me from a perfectly good brothel for this?"

Instantly forgettable but more than passable as a diversion; solid B-movie cheese that's like Titanic-lite meets Gladiator-lite.

I find Justin Bieber's gangsta' posing more convincing.

You know you have a problem when you start rooting for the mountain to win.

If you are attending this disaster movie purely for the famous natural disaster it promises to depict, you won't have too many complaints.

Basically a competent action picture that retreads to the safety of its formulas, primarily because it doesn't have the desire, much less the thought, to pursue more challenging avenues.

The legion of fans of Kit Harington will enjoy filling the time as they wait for that first episode of the 4th season of Game of Thrones.

Some may find it divertingly entertaining but for fans of the genre it's been there, done that, got the toga.

Occasionally entertaining in its silliness, Pompeii just about avoids total disaster, but even the volcanic spectacle underwhelms in this largely joyless blockbuster.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 21, 2019
If the film lacks energy up to this point, it more than makes up for it hereon in, saving this disaster film from being a complete and utter disaster.

As the film begins, the camera pans slowly over what appear to be statues, but which turn our to be the petrified remains of the citizens of Pompeii. These are the most multi-dimensional people we see on screen.

Filmmaker Paul W. S. Anderson's misguided molten-driven melodrama Pompeii is not as explosive in conception as one would imagine based upon its manufactured, boisterous presentation.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 11, 2018
Pompeii is bad, but not at all in the interesting way. It's derivative and tedious, without an original thought in its head on any level.
| Original Score: 2.5/10 | Nov 1, 2018
Besides some impressive technical wizardry, Pompeii lies in Paul W.S. Anderson's list of "let it burn" films.

The action sequences alone are jaw dropping, heart racing affairs but flashy stunts and technical wizardry don't always support a story lacking in character development, therefore giving you minimal people to root for.

There's not a single gesture that isn't a cliché, not a single line of script that isn't a stage direction or harvested shamelessly from Wikipedia.
