Riders of Justice Reviews

Suffused with character-driven comedy, and not avoiding elements of violence, this is an outstanding film. The ensemble cast is flawless and the witty and deliciously complex screenplay is among the best we've seen this year.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Oct 2, 2021

Mikkelsen manages to simultaneously lean into and dismantle tough-guy tropes while playing a stoic soldier reeling from the death of his wife in a train crash.

| Aug 11, 2021

Fun in a "what on earth is happening" kind of way.

| Aug 5, 2021

What separates the ensuing mayhem from a thousand generic thrillers out there is an impish streak and writing that smartly juggles big ideas, mad gun battles and guilty laughs.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 28, 2021

[A] very violent, very funny and oddly life-affirming film.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 24, 2021

It is, thankfully, less macho than that sounds.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 23, 2021

There's a sincere empathy for these damaged characters, and intelligent musings on fate, coincidence and trauma, all helped down by some delightfully absurd and audacious comedy.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 22, 2021

Jensen is not only gifted at the swerve in the story. The movie has touching respect for its characters. If revenge is a messy project, so too is being human.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 21, 2021

Riders Of Justice is an oddball delight. Taking a leaf from the Coens' playbook, it's by turns ultra-violent then drily funny and surprisingly wise. Come for Mikkelsen, stay for his winning band of lovable losers.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 20, 2021

There are plenty of left turns (and the occasional dead end) here, but "Riders of Justice" is no waste of time.

| Original Score: 3/4 | May 26, 2021

There are bizarre and sometimes awkward bumps along the way, but the way Jensen has bent his narrative to serve deeply serio-comic purposes reveals a bold and adventurous storytelling confidence.

| May 21, 2021

It's really smart. This is a really enjoyable film.

| May 21, 2021

Mikkelsen wouldn't know how to be uninteresting on screen if he tried, but his performance here might have felt overly familiar if not for how the rest of Jensen's cast plays against him.

| Original Score: B+ | May 20, 2021

Riders of Justice is a film of contradictions, but that's its purpose. With gentle, sensitive humor and pathos dominating the story, it's really about self-justification, as the scientists and the soldier form an unlikely team.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 20, 2021

A pitch-black comedy about questions, coincidences and ideas that pile up faster than the body count.

| May 20, 2021

A kind of popcorn movie that doesn't just let wit and storytelling serve as the garnish for big-bang action, but makes that its actual priority.

| Original Score: A- | May 17, 2021

Riders of Justiceis a risk-taking movie that may have you cheering one moment and recoiling the next. It shouldn't work, but somehow it does.

| May 15, 2021

Such wild zigzags in tone ought not to work at all. And yet they do, thanks to Jensen's calm, slightly wry command of the story, and a cast that have all understood the assignment, even when their respective assignments are all quite different.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 15, 2021

A deliciously absurdist, fundamentally serious, even philosophical enterprise that uses a superheated revenge plot to address our common need for making sense out of life.

| May 15, 2021

Brutal, sad, funny, and disarmingly sweet-natured, Riders of Justice is not so much a revenge movie as a movie about revenge.

| Original Score: 4/4 | May 14, 2021
