Risen Reviews

"Risen" should be able to become, even nine years after its original release, the kind of film that any family should watch and enjoy during Easter. I'm sure they'll be just as (pleasantly) surprised as this critic. [Full review in Spanish].

With “Risen,” Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Aiello have come up with a story that we’ve never seen before, one that is in no way blasphemous, while offering up a “what-if” set of circumstances that are entirely believable and could have happened.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 9, 2024

While the film is true to its initial premise, Risen is unusual enough to grab and hold attention. [Full review in Spanish]

...an exceedingly erratic drama...

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 5, 2022

It's about faith and the strength of belief, but is flawed by inconsistent dialogue style - it ranges from sword-and-sandal formality to modern day vernacular - and the limitations of a low budget that prevents any truly miraculous visions.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 3, 2021

An almost straightforward account made better by a strong ensemble cast.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 21, 2020

But even if it is the best film of its type, it's not broadly appealing, and the non-religious moviegoer is likely to find it as bland as I did.

Risen is a pretty riveting film from director Kevin Reynolds. No hammy acting or dogmatic bluntness, thanks to Fiennes' layered performance as a conflicted man. I highly recommend for believers and non-believers alike.

It doesn't preach too much and has a good story.

| Original Score: B | Apr 15, 2019

The production values are solid, the soundtrack not overly intrusive and whilst the characterisation leaves something to be desired, Joseph Fiennes does his best with a lot of middle-distance staring.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 9, 2019

Although it offers nothing new or challenging in terms of its narrative, Risen offers some straightforward, uncontroversial, albeit fairly interesting family entertainment for the Easter season.

Risen...wavers from cheery to gruesome to absurd and lands in the differentiated realm of oddball fun.

It's undeniably one of the higher-quality faith-based films to hit theaters in recent years, with acting, writing, and production values to rival other mainstream releases.

Despite some far-from-divine supporting performances and an almost laughably obvious link to the Turin Shroud, the film is clearly made with love but, predictably, springs little in the way of surprises.

Sensitively filmed with some flashes of violence and gore to keep things interesting, Risen is a great resurrection movie for curious non-believers and Christians alike.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 20, 2017

Fortunately for the story, Clavius's internal struggle and the investigation itself are intense enough to compensate for the dearth of cultural thoughtfulness.

Risen is a moving contribution to the canon of biblical movies

| Aug 11, 2017

Risen is certainly a step up for this genre, and it's more open-minded than you would expect. But this is still a movie made for a captured Christian audience, and it will be those viewers who will like it best.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 9, 2017

It's a novel take on a Biblical classic, but CSI: Judea only lasts for about 30 minutes before Clavius discovers "Yeshua" (Cliff Curtis) alive and grinning.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 28, 2016

There's nothing terribly wrong with Risen, and I'd happily watch it on television some lazy Sunday afternoon, but there's just not enough here to keep it from being, ultimately, a pretty forgettable movie.
