Roman military tribune Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) remains set in his ways after serving 25 years in the army. He arrives at a crossroad when he's tasked to investigate the mystery of what happened to Jesus (Cliff Curtis) following the Crucifixion. Accompanied by trusted aide Lucius (Tom Felton), his quest to disprove rumors of a risen Messiah makes him question his own beliefs and spirituality. As his journey takes him to places never dreamed of, Clavius discovers the truth that he's been seeking.
It was a really good movie. Very instructive. I really liked it. I will watch it again later. Also, I really like the small details of the movie.
Excellent movie for all Catholics and Christians. It starts with Jesus already on the cross, but tells the story of a Roman Tribune who witnesses his own miraculous sight of Jesus. And boy, does he have a story to tell.
For a Christian, this movie is an excellent iteration of an often repeated story. It's especially good at Easter. The cast gives a great interpretation of their characters. This film can strengthen the faith of those who believe in a risen Savior.
Really enjoyed watching the story from the perspective it being a crime investigation. Joseph Fines did fine job portraying a non-believer slowly finding the truth about the Easter Resurrection.
While I do feel that the movie loses steam - after all, this Christian film can't risk alienating its largest demographic - near the end, Risen is overall a pretty good biblical film with a decent premise in the form of the Resurrection of Christ from the perspective of a Roman soldier depicted as a historical mystery film, good performances, decent cinematography & costume design and good production values for a movie done on a relatively small budget. Definitely worth watching even if it's just for the novelty of seeing what the director pitched as an unofficial sequel to The Passion of the Christ. P.S. I find it hilarious that Tom Felton's character in this film is the right-hand man for Voldemort's brother and, to top it off, his character's name is Lucius just like the father of his Harry Potter character. So much for everybody except Emma Watson retreating to smaller-scale projects to avoid typecasting (and this wouldn't be the last time something like this happened in 2016; Daniel Radcliffe in Now You See Me 2, anyone?)
'Risen" (2016) offers a poignant portrayal of the biblical account of Jesus Christ's resurrection, reimagined through the lens of a skeptical Roman military tribune named Clavius, portrayed with depth and humanity by Joseph Fiennes. Fiennes' portrayal of Clavius is particularly striking as he navigates a complex journey from doubt to belief, grappling with the extraordinary events surrounding Jesus' disappearance from the tomb. His internal struggle resonates with audiences, humanizing the character and inviting empathy as he confronts the implications of faith in the midst of his duty to the Roman Empire. The film succeeds in fleshing out its characters, presenting them as multifaceted individuals with their own fears, doubts, and hopes. From Clavius' internal turmoil to the disciples' unwavering conviction, each character is depicted with sincerity and emotional depth, transcending mere archetypes to become relatable figures with whom audiences can connect. Through stunning cinematography and meticulous attention to historical detail, "Risen" transports viewers to the vibrant and tumultuous world of ancient Jerusalem. The film's immersive visuals serve to enhance the authenticity of the narrative, inviting audiences to witness the events of Jesus' resurrection with a sense of immediacy and wonder. Overall, "Risen" stands as a testament to the power of storytelling to illuminate timeless truths. By humanizing its characters and presenting a fresh perspective on a familiar tale, the film offers a compelling exploration of faith, doubt, and the transformative power of encountering the divine. With its stirring performances and resonant themes, "Risen" serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring relevance of the Easter story.
A great production. The resurrection of Jesus seen from the Roman side, from a Roman soldier
A well known story, told from the unconventional perspective of a Roman tribune. I liked the first half of the movie, covering the crusifiction and the mystery of the missing body, and I enjoyed the politics surrounding the events. However, the film changes when Clavius sees Jesus alive, and from that point I found it too vague and insubstantial to watch with any enthusiasm. I just wanted it to end!
This movie was very good. Better than I thought it would be! ❤️
I really enjoyed this movie. Joseph Fiennes and Tom Felton were great. Interesting take on a movie from the time of Jesus.
I hate all religion. So, from my point of view, this is just a film of a story. However, it's a bloody good story and terrific film. Terrific acting, very atmospheric and recommended viewing whether or not you're religious……..
Fantastic movie. Absolutely one of my favorites.
