Shallow Hal Reviews
Unexpectedly rather sweet and underplayed, given that it comes from the gross-out kings.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 8, 2023
The situations become too embarrassing to be funny.
| Nov 8, 2023
A movie that meanders from one sight gag to the next, many of which you've already seen in the commercials.

Romantic comedy is pretty tame for Farrelly Bros.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 28, 2010
With the relatively untested Black coming on awfully strong, the lack of directorial finesse lets the enterprise down, creating some clunky scenes and dead air where laughs might have been expected.

The film is not as funny as their best, but fascinates in the discomforting way it foregrounds the brothers' normally buried, facile moral dialectic.
| Jun 24, 2006
The Farrelly brothers are fresh out of ideas with this dull effort, a kind of Farrelly Lite. They have replaced intentional bad taste with the unintentional sort.
| Feb 3, 2002
Hilarious in parts, sickeningly sentimental in others, Shallow Hal has the Farrellys trying to expand their range, with only mildly successful results.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 21, 2002
We've seen so many crummy comedies that try to be There's Something About Mary or something like this. And the Farrelly brothers come to the rescue and show us how it's done.

The film itself is little more than a series of fat jokes.
Full Review | Original Score: 1.5/5 | Nov 24, 2001
Not only light on laughs but discomfitingly didactic in its disgust.

I almost hate to have to say this but the Farrellys might be better off going back to their rude-and-crude roots instead of mucking around with this sensitivity business.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Nov 11, 2001
One problem with the movie is that instead of the characters themselves being funny, the jokes in the movie happen around them.

Makes the case for restricting the Farrellys to mere gross-out movies.

An ill-conceived, slovenly executed and disingenuous comedy.

The movie's valuable message that we must look beyond physical appearances to find the heart within ... is drowned out by the din of loathsome idiots mocking physical appearances.
| Nov 9, 2001
All this sweet, inoffensive stuff is actually pretty boring.
| Nov 9, 2001
It gets away with fat jokes at the same time it seems to be on the side of the angels and inner beauty.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 9, 2001
May be the best Farrellys movie yet, even though it doesn't live up to the pair's usual level of uproarious, crass comic genius.
