She Said Reviews

The film’s screenplay is not always a triumph – it sometimes feels as though some of the monologuing about truth, sexism, abuse and journalism is being stuffed into the characters’ mouths – but this can be forgiven when their messages are so striking.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 18, 2024

It’s pulsing with emotional and social depth, and given that She Said is a familiar story, it’s remarkable it can still be insightful and surprising.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 10, 2022

She Said is a powerful film and a timely one.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 3, 2022

It's very powerful and well-acted... A tribute to dogged journalism.

No gratuitous reenactments of assault, no horrifying climactic events... It's riveting.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 29, 2022

She Said is not self-congratulatory; it’s a reminder that empathy can require immense effort, and that even then, such effort might not lead to certain success.

... The movie has a frankness and clarity of purpose to defy even the edgiest troll, a sturdy pulse embodied by a coolly furious Mulligan.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 28, 2022

Schrader’s sensitive, unshowy approach to the directing choices is a smart decision; this is a film that is respectful of and in service to the stories of the women.

[P]acks a punch.

| Nov 26, 2022

An exciting and often powerful piece of mainstream film-making that allows its heroes to emerge as normal people who make everyday mistakes. Highly recommended.

Even if you know where it’s going — which you certainly do provided that you’ve had internet access at least once in the last few years — there’s a thrill in getting to the inevitable takedown of Harvey Weinstein.

While Kazan often feels a little out of her depth, the film’s narrative is carried throughout by its peripheral characters rather than the main protagonists with Morton rescuing the film from its needlessly detailed and repetitive tone.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 24, 2022

I admire the way it takes the macho cliched nonsense out of journalism in movies: these are not boozy guys being adorable and chaotic, but smart, persistent people doggedly doing their job.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 24, 2022

Pedestrian in style but compelling and deeply moving at times.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 23, 2022

She Said is as enthralling as it is infuriating.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 22, 2022

For all She Said employs crescendo strings, it is not a thriller: there is not one moment of tension or fear. What are the “stakes”, you ask? The leads worry Ronan Farrow’s New Yorker article will come out first. With respect: are you kidding me?

She Said is good. But grubbiness could have made it great.

| Nov 19, 2022

[She Said] doesn’t add much to the existing record. What it does do, when it’s good, is something the news headlines could not: It dramatizes the survivors’ voices on camera.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 19, 2022

A worthy entry to a film genre that includes Spotlight and of course All the President’s Men.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 18, 2022

At a time when journalism is often under siege, there’s value in displaying its noblest qualities and loftiest aspirations. Even with hiccups and quibbles, She Said achieves that central mission.
