Side Effects Reviews
Mara and Law are terrific in this film. Mara does a great job of drawing you into the character and making you feel her pain, while at the same time, you’re trying to understand her and what is going on with the story.

A sexy, surprising, and straightforward psychological thriller that leads to a fulfilling payoff.

Steven Soderbergh has crafted a meticulously treacherous Hitchcockian thriller; the atmosphere crackles with sexual tension and betrayal.

Soderbergh skewers the reluctance to discuss mental health in an unforgettable psychological thriller...

... Soderbergh’s take on the Joe Esterhaus thrillers of the nineties, only smarter, more clinically-focused (as Soderbergh is wont to do), and without the ice picks. For all the twists, this is a thriller that turns on character.

Soderbergh keeps the viewer involved and never sure what to expect, while every twist and turn comes as a surprise, informed and enhanced by the tricky film’s critique of the pharmacological industry.
| Original Score: 4/4 | Sep 12, 2022
The performances are strong and Soderbergh has a visual style that perfectly fits this type of film.

Dr. Banks' battle against evil lesbian scheme-hatchery sculpts him into a perfect husband, father, and doctor. It's surprising there isn't an epilogue to the film of him undergoing yet another transformation-this time into a saint, or maybe Superman.

One feels a certain sympathy, but, unfortunately, Soderbergh continues to look for a formal or organizational solution to what is an objective artistic and intellectual problem.
| Aug 13, 2020
A medically-centred thriller that promises to be one kind of film before taking a sharp turn into being a second - and much less interesting - kind.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Aug 6, 2020
Side Effects never takes the easy road, instead pointing an accusatory finger at all sides, at all the pieces that come together.
| Original Score: B+ | Jul 9, 2020
Though it doesn't contain Steven Soderbergh's best-in-class storyline, Side Effects is an acceptable thriller when it uses the right dose of mystery. [Full review in Spanish]

Side Effects is a thrilling mastery of mystery!!

An engaging and deeply pleasurable nail-biter done without compromises.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 8, 2019
There were some good reveals towards the last third, but I prefer a little more thriller in my thrillers.

Side Effects showcases much of what the just 50-year-old filmmaker does best.

Unlike a lot of other thrillers, there is braininess in all of the players here, so that we're engaged by all sides of the equation as the stakes escalate. For those who are fond of mental Rubik's Cubes, Side Effects will be pretty effective.
| Original Score: B | Feb 9, 2019
Stylish, sexually charged and suitably satirical, Soderbergh has -- if Side Effects is to be his last big-screen outing -- gone out on an entrancing, encapsulating high.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 9, 2019
Expect the unexpected and you'll enjoy this chilling ride.
| Jan 26, 2019
Side Effects is a stylish thriller, one that's mostly entertaining, until it decides one big twist isn't enough.
