South of Heaven Reviews
If it's worth watching it's entirely because of Sudeikis and Lilly.

A comforting thriller about charming losers... [Full review in Spanish]

The performances in South of Heaven - at least those of Sudeikis, Whigham, and Colter - are solid, if unflashy.

Just the movie if you're in the mood for shootouts, hit-and-run accidents, hip banter and romance.

Wigham is the only actor who seems to be having fun with the overwrought script; but he was born to play smarmy Southern creeps.

Starts out as a harmless, sleepy movie and then goes on a wild ride that is very entertaining.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Oct 26, 2021
Jason Sudeikis takes the role of Jimmy and goes from calm and quiet to violent without changing the expression on his face.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 23, 2021
Sure, affable nice guys will do extreme things when threatened, but going from a sweet and doting schlub to a one-shot-killing henchmen destroyer gets really implausible in a hurry.

A one-dimensional look of the protagonists with no substance. I began watching and was waiting for it to end.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Oct 17, 2021
Sudeikis gives it the old college try, but I so love his gentle comedy that I felt like he was playing an ex-con in an "SNL" skit... you know, just a second away from donning a silly track suit and doing a goofy dance.
| Original Score: C | Oct 15, 2021
The relationship between Jimmy and Ann is well-drawn, but too much of the rest of the movie can't accommodate the screenplay's wild variations.

South of Heaven's most meaningful moments are in the interplay between Lilly and Sudeikis as the star-crossed lovers with time most definitely not on their side... It's hard not to wish that there'd been more time with them.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 15, 2021
The cast is solid enough across the board to hold the interest even when the pacing drifts to a halt, or when Keshales drops in another stereotype. But it feels like a movie we've seen many times before.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Oct 14, 2021
This ludicrous combination of sentimental claptrap and tough-guy mayhem starts out insipid, and grows increasingly cracked as it progresses.
| Original Score: D+ | Oct 14, 2021
Flat, misses the mark, and never realizes its potential.
| Original Score: C | Oct 13, 2021
If you can... focus on the performances, "South Of Heaven" is a crime story/love story which gives Jason Sudeikis a chance to shine as a dramatic actor.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 13, 2021
South of Heaven is an uneven and somewhat strange movie...And yet, it still kind of works, thanks to the willingness of the cast to get weird and go for it. I dug it, even when (or perhaps especially when) it didn't fully make sense.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 12, 2021
Narratively unsatisfying, with its cast members leaning into their strengths, South of Heaven is neither good or bad enough for any definite distinction, doomed to a nebulous state of cinema purgatory.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 11, 2021
With every plot twist, the less credible the film becomes.
| Original Score: B | Oct 10, 2021
It is just a really sloppy, clumsy, and almost insultingly weak screenplay... And yet you forgive it, because the acting is so good.
