Stargate Reviews

Not enough of the plot was designed well enough to stand out from the pack of other ’90s sci-fi flicks; creative complications are simply far too few.

Emmerich's film may not be a lot of things, but as an action-packed, science-fiction rollercoaster ride, it's fabulous fun.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 25, 2024

The spirit of adventure keeps the cheesy parts fun.

| Mar 31, 2023

Loud and convoluted, and unless you get off on special effects the only reason to see it is James Spader.

| Original Score: C- | Aug 31, 2022

An ungainly, but interesting blend of sci-fiction and an old-fashioned, sandblown desert epic.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 29, 2020

...an entertaining sci-fi thriller...

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | May 31, 2020

Stargate is a blast from the past in many ways, but it imaginatively employs the latest special effects technology to give audiences new thrills.

The kind of flick where Kurt Russell dispatches an Anubis-looking baddie after first telling him, in the kind of bon mot that elevates the thing an entire letter grade, "Give my regards to King Tut, a**hole."

It works not because ridiculousness is concealed, but because ridiculousness on this scale becomes something else. Don't let anyone tell you that Stargate, lifeless script and all, isn't clunky fun, proudly trembling on the brink of classic camp.

Stargate starts promisingly... But it then turns into an interminable exercise in special effects and not-so-special fisticuffs.

What Emmerich achieves is a sense of grand scale that makes the film fun to watch as a space adventure.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 27, 2011

Promising setup killed by action-film cliches.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 2, 2011

"Has matured wonderfully, sustaining as a curious genre exercise in blockbuster yearn marked by surprising buoyancy, madly entertaining performances, and a fertile cinematic imagination behind the camera not yet corrupted by massive box office success."

| Original Score: B+ | Jun 2, 2010

Still, this is a decent little diversion, the kind of pure popcorn fodder that would find a far more ballsy form when Will Smith took on city-sized flying saucers in Independence Day.
