Stir of Echoes Reviews
As the plot kicks in, the hysteria mounts and the explanations start coming, the tension starts to dissipate. Like Bacon's strenuous attempt to sound working class, the movie tries too hard.

The skillful shock cuts will make you jump out of your skin, but it's the digital visualisation of the ghostly Samantha which really makes the flesh crawl.

Second-time director David Koepp steers clear of silly pyrotechnics and empty show as he anchors his supernatural thriller in Tom's daily rituals, employing the racket of city life and intelligent sound edits to crank up the tension.

When Stir of Echoes is focused on the supernatural, it is a scary and technically superior film. However, as it turns into a conventional thriller it becomes ordinary.

Koepp keeps Stir of Echoes stirring for a good hour or so but is unable to sustain the mood throughout.

Stir of Echoes gives a classic ghost story extra zip by insisting on the reality of the characters and their place.

Koepp has made an interesting but irrelevant parallel between the otherworld and movies.

The first two-thirds of the movie is engagingly spooky, more so than The Sixth Sense.

The real skill Koepp shows is that he grounds the scary stuff in a believable reality and delivers a ghost story that doesn't lose its grip after the spirits have unambiguously been made manifest.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 1, 2000
It has enough smarts to scare us, Sixth Sense or not.

Stir of Echoes is much more down and dirty, and the thrills are more visceral.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 1, 2000
Stir of Echoes falls flat during its final third when more prosaic issues of homicide and revenge enter into the story, but right up to that point it manages to sink its chilly fingers deep in the meat of your mind.

The more we know, the less we care.

Stir of Echoes might have worked just fine a few decades ago, but it now seems too simply schematic to spook us as much as it wants to.

Stir of Echoes is a canny piece of mature filmmaking that never recovers from a nervous breakdown it suffers halfway through.

It offers a stir of an echo of horror, rather than the genuine cathartic article.
