The Talented Mr. Ripley Reviews
The film feels warm but unsettled, as if hinting at approaching storms; the score, too, flits from lugubrious to manic.

The menace builds as Tom’s deceptions pile up and the locations — Rome, Venice, cliffside Positano — are as gorgeous as the cast.

A decidedly dark and demented sort of polished gem, all spectacular surfaces masking a fundamentally rotten core.

The sumptuous production, eclectic score, grand performances and engrossing moments of suspense make Ripley one the year's finer offerings.

Minghella puts us inside Ripley's head, inviting us to share his envy and giddy excitement even as we recognize his warped need to be someone he's not.

"The Talented Mr. Ripley" slithers along with great elegance and purpose for most of Ripley's reign, stumbling only at the end when Minghella trips on the limitations imposed by his own updated psychoanalysis.

Familiarity is the watchword of this overblown opus, which neglects holes in the plot to play up its postmodern theme of identity as pastiche -- a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.

On balance, The Talented Mr. Ripley is worth seeing more for its undeniably delightful journey than its final destination.

Not only is it an elegantly polished affair, with top notch performances all round, and magnificent camerawork and editing, it's also acutely aware of how class, money and sex shape desire and resentment.

It's a gorgeously unsettling film. You can hide in the shadows, but luminescence exposes who you are, and the only escape is into another identity.

In a starry line-up it's Jude Law who commands most presence, playing the charmer so well that his absence in the latter half leaves a gaping void.

Even before its release, The Talented Mr. Ripley has attracted some mighty serious analytic attention.

If anybody can create sympathy for the devil, the angelic Matt Damon can.

Minghella's -- and Damon's -- triumph here is in making Ripleys of us all.

Just the thing to clear your Capra-glutted holiday movie palate.

And there are good reasons to see the new film, both for the scenery and the generally fine acting.
