The Alto Knights Reviews
The prevailing feeling throughout The Alto Knights‘ is that it should’ve been made 20 years ago. Too much of the film feels like a replay of Martin Scorsese‘s greatest hits.

The Alto Knights is a decent film. When it relies on the classic elements of gangster cinema,...it offers a compelling story, and although smaller in scale, it's no less interesting than Scorsese's epics. [Full review in Spanish]

There are moments of brilliance, and De Niro remains the undisputed king of gangster cinema, but the film never becomes more than the sum of its parts.

Robert De Niro returns to mafia stories with Barry Levinson, in a dual performance that is intended to be the main attraction of the production. [Full Review in Spanish]

This movie proves two Robert De Niros are not better than one.

The story of The Alto Knights and how the New York mafia crumbled due to the rivalry between Costello and Genovese is a fascinating one, and there are hints of it scattered throughout the runtime, but it comes up short often

...The Alto Knights is an interesting film about the mafia world, with several notable aspects, but it doesn't reach the level of the best works of Scorsese, Coppola, or De Palma. [Full review in Spanish]

Barry Levinson's supposedly ambitious mob drama misses the mark.

Rather than being a distraction, the highlight here is De Niro playing opposite himself. Double the actor unfortunately doesn’t make the film twice as good, but if you love mobster films, I couldn’t think of better company than this bunch.

The Alto Knights won’t be remembered among the greats of crime movies, or even as a standout in De Niro’s career. Diverting in parts, but ultimately a film that you wish was much better than it is.

This feels like a Netflix mini-series edited down to two sleepy, derivative hours.

Yet, tragically, the resulting film from Rain Main’s Barry Levinson is a lacklustre effort considering the talent on offer.

Robert De Niro is a force of nature, even in the worst of films.

De Niro leads another enjoyable Italian American Gangster story with all the cloak and dagger intrigue we’ve come to anticipate. The Alto Knights had dialogue that felt like foreshadowing but mostly didn’t materialise so resulted in old man talking.

The Alto Knights is an impressive film, taking inherently interesting material and doing very well not to foul it up.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Apr 1, 2025
Even if the results lack the heady rush of a GoodFellas, The Alto Knights gives the old-school pleasures of densely plotted, keenly cast Mafia movies a fitfully engaging workout.

Isn’t boring, and it affords the opportunity to appreciate Robert De Niro’s virtuosity as he runs the gamut of mobster characterization in his two roles. But as a whole it’s a pale reflection of the classics of the genre he made in earlier days.

I expected better.

Has the anonymous look and shaggy storytelling of an HBO original movie — from 1998.

More interesting in the context of Robert De Niro’s filmography than it is necessarily as a standalone picture.
