The Angels' Share Reviews
Such an approach starts to grate before the film skips toward its sickly-sentimental climax...admirable to see the director rip up his own rulebook so late in his career, but to do so mid-film is perhaps not the best way to do it.

Ken Loach blends his usual politically acute social realism with a tale of hope and humour in this gentle Highlands caper.

The best movie so far this year.

The Angels' Share takes Loach's trademark edge and softens it a wee bit .

THE ANGELS' SHARE is rather like a good single malt with a huge block of ice in it. Even if this perhaps ruins it for the more picky connoisseur, you can't deny it goes down easily. Slàinte.

It's a feel-good comedy with a UK edge.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 19, 2019
The morality may be murky, the language somewhat shocking, but Loach's underdogs win us over nonetheless, and just might win over new whisky lovers, to boot.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Apr 17, 2019
The Angels' Share really conjures the spirit of the Ealing Comedies with its playfulness of spirit and generosity toward its characters.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 3, 2019
This is far-and-away one of the most lovingly-crafted pieces of British cinema released this year, all the more pleasurable when you acknowledge that it comes from one of our best and longest-serving directors.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 8, 2019
The Angels' Share certainly has elements of a crime caper -- but this rich film is actually so much more.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Dec 19, 2018
Part social realism, part comedy caper, and so good-natured, warm and affectionate it's rather a joy, even though it doesn't exactly add up.

A little too trite and hypothetical for some people to handle, but there's no denying the boundless charm, wit and cool air that envelops this suitably amiable tale.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 13, 2018
Probably the first Ken Loach film you could call 'jaunty.'

Modest in scale, expansive in emotions, this movie is a rarity: a contemporary tragicomedy.
| Original Score: A- | Mar 3, 2014
The film is cocktail of comedy and heist with a large shot of social realism.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 1, 2014
Slipping back and forth between drama and comedy, The Angels' Share initially seems shaggy and unstructured, but that's part of its appeal.

Mingling the peaty scent of Scottish street life with a distilled take on unemployed, at-risk youth, director Ken Loach serves up a surprisingly upbeat cocktail thanks to a subplot involving rare whisky.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 1, 2014
Despite its ultimate sense of optimism, the Glasgow-set dramedy nevertheless carries a sense of foreboding. And yet, that might not have been the intention.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 1, 2014
With this shaggy-dog tale of four petty Glaswegian criminals and their improbably successful scheme to steal the world's most valuable whiskey, Loach turns navet into a sort of moral philosophy.

...a low key and rather marvelous, sweet-natured heist movie
