The Cellar Reviews
If you are easily scared and want to dip your toes into the horror genre, The Cellar is probably a good place to start. If you are somewhat of an expert at watching horror-based IPs, maybe give this a pass and seek out better films.

Bares all the gothic offerings austerely: tension between science and the occult; darkness as a representation of Evil; space as an architectural likeness of those who inhabit it. Well-known iconography, but in the end, it works. [Full review in Spanish]

Unoriginal but tense, this is a horror story that manages to be both traditional and immersive. However, when you lift the veil, it's empty and it lacks potency. [Full review in Spanish]

A strong, spooky idea that can’t quite make the leap to feature-length.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 10, 2022
The Cellar shies away from its most promising moments and effective scares, and its strong finale isn’t strong enough to salvage what is an ultimately forgettable film.

Once its revealed that its alchemical math might be opening up portals to hell, 'The Cellar' hits its full stride and turns into something more ambitious and silly than youd expect. The whole affair goes to hell in the best way possible.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 25, 2022
in the end, its a game of style over substance for 'The Cellar'.

In a world of cheap jump scares and terrible CGI apparitions, Muldowney's film is a handsomely crafted, and consistently blood-chilling reminder of what an old-school horror story can really achieve, when given the room to breathe.

Great to see Elisha Cuthbert back on the screen but the movie overall is just nothing special.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Apr 19, 2022
It seems that despite its escalating events of the last half hour, it really isnt all that original.
| Apr 19, 2022
The pieces of something decent are present. Muldowney simply cannot fit them together.
| Apr 19, 2022
Atmospheric, but shallow, dull and underwhelming.
| Apr 18, 2022
May be light on its horror ingredients, but its mystery-heavy mindset keeps it suitably watchable.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 18, 2022
What made the short film so effective—the universality of a concept that reaches back to our primitive fears of the dark—Muldowney trades for a baggy foray into paranormal activity bookended by two strong short films.

The film is little more than a bunch of people creeping around attempting to figure out what is real, what isnt, and why we should care either way.

“The Cellar” really works best as a metaphor about parents who can only watch from a distance as their children get consumed by the adult world’s savage cynicism.
| Apr 17, 2022
Even though there are elements of the story that are very familiar, it has enough freshness to it to catch my eye.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 15, 2022
The Cellar has the right tone, textures, and location for a creepfest -- and the story builds in a safe, traditional manner -- but it feels empty in the end, as the reveal doesn't feel worth the journey.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Apr 15, 2022
The most immediate problem with The Cellar is that everybody but Cuthbert seems to have made this movie on autopilot.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 15, 2022
Theres nothing especially new here, but the first half is handled much better than in most similar movies.
