The Double Reviews
Character motivations, sequences of events, and that thing called plausibility are all a bit offensively slapdash.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Jun 27, 2019
In short, for fans of spy films of the '80s and '90s, particularly those starring Gere, The Double will not disappoint.
| Original Score: B | Feb 8, 2019
Like a magician performing one too many tricks, "The Double" overplays its deception while spinning a mildly diverting yarn.

Richard Gere and Topher Grace say the lines and hit their marks like professionals do, but almost from the opening scene it's clear that this is a thriller that is less than thrilling.

Have you ever seen a movie like this? Yes? Then you know the answers to those questions. Or at least some of the answers. And you're right, they all involve "gotcha."
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Aug 3, 2016
It's not bad, but it's not great either.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Aug 3, 2016
Old laundry, a limp, doddering would-be thriller that desperately needs Jack Bauer to show up and start shooting things and yelling at people.
| Original Score: D+ | Jun 22, 2013
Director/Writer Michael Brandt does a nice job of building tension throughout the entire movie and gives old man Gere some action man chops.
| Original Score: B- | Apr 22, 2012
I may have seen some things coming in the story, but it was nonetheless interesting to watch things play out.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 13, 2012
Gere phones in a cool, detached performance. Grace is sub-par as the whiz kid agent. And, the story, despite numerous plot twists, fails to entertain. Grade: C.
| Original Score: C | Feb 8, 2012
You have to admire Brandt and Haas for taking such a gamble, but unfortunately it doesn't quite pay off.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 31, 2012
It is a flawed film, but one that accomplishes what it sets out to do: entertain, if in fits and starts, for an hour and a half.

the ineffectiveness of the final half hour ultimately ensures that The Double ends on a disappointingly anticlimactic note.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 27, 2012
The type of professionally assembled star programmer a big studio would once release wide to a decent return in an off-peak season.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 13, 2012
With nothing resembling a character worth rooting for, the fact that the plot of The Double just gets sillier and sillier makes it one of the most annoying films of the year.
| Original Score: 1.0/5.0 | Nov 4, 2011
Brandt's thriller doesn't have much of a connection to the present, let alone reality.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Nov 4, 2011
Questionable motives and unbelievable decisions are relatively small potatoes compared with the Sputnik-size plotholes.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Nov 4, 2011
The feature labors over details as though the C.I.A. is going to use this as a training tool for new recruits, taking a very silly, logic-leaping effort with the utmost seriousness.
| Original Score: D+ | Nov 3, 2011
Like a stripper who gets naked too quickly, the lukewarm spy thriller "The Double" lays out its big plot twist early in the movie - and soon finds, shivering, that it has nowhere else to go.

The title "The Double" doesn't refer to baseball, but it could. The thriller may not hit it out of the park, but it's a solid double.
