The Green Knight Reviews

Apr 15, 2025

Even though some scenes drag on, like the beginning of the journey to the Green Chapel, the surrealism of the film makes it a unique experience. The lighting, the use of colors, the design of the Green Knight, and the quality of the shots demonstrate David Lowery's talent for visual storytelling. The color green is present in every scene, contrasted by the red of flames, blood, and faces. The color gold is the only color that replaces green in a few scenes, bathing King Arthur during the Christmas banquet or highlighting Sir Gawain when he succeeds in a chivalrous challenge. Each scene contains magnificent images that could be transformed into paintings. I loved Dev Patel in this film. He is very credible in the role of a young adult who never feels up to the task and does nothing to remedy it. The film mixes an existential crisis with the struggle of a young man who wants to become a knight without having the virtues. Each scene and each line of dialogue comment on one of these two stories, but never form a very harmonious blend. The film was difficult for me to understand on my first viewing. But after the second time, I was really able to appreciate the film and understand the meaning of each surreal scene. The visuals and set were cool, but other than that it had a weak storyline. It was hard to follow.

I despise movies that force the audience to make sense out of things that do not make sense.

This movie had the draw in as a mystical quest.. a boy proving he is a man, in a land that makes you wonder… but… leaves you wondering, why did I sit through the 2 hours, when my common sense set to throw out the tv and maybe cancel my prime subscription… I feel like the directors direction what’s to push for what the F*ck is going on.. As half the time you are waiting for the quest line to make sense, and the other time you are shown a possible outcome that has better setting than the main line. Really at the and of it your left with a man who accepts s*ucide. And becomes a Knight. Your reward is your imagination. As the director showed you what the outcome of all the negative choices are, as well as connecting you to the mushroom scene in real life, as you would have to be high to get the concept.

This is such a wonderfully directed movie. The camerawork is mesmerizing with its lingering shots and surreal angles. The lighting is sharp and invokes a dark yet beautiful tone for the movie. The costume designs are popping with color in contrast to the dreary yet intriguing medieval landscape. The practical effects and on-site filming locations provide a genuine sense of realism that grounds the more fantastical mythological elements of the movie. The story is true in fashion to many ancient pieces of folklore: bizarre with a dark twist of fate for the flawed protagonist. In some ways, it almost feels like an inversion of the hero’s journey. The protagonist is reckless, cowardly, and above all selfish. But not to a cartoonish degree either. He certainly feels guilt for his lack of honor and seeks to become a better man. However, there is no magical coming of age transformation from his simple quest. He certainly grows and matures by the end, but it’s not exactly a happily ever after. I’d say more of a cautionary tale about taking responsibility. The pacing is slow, but meaningful and intriguing every step of the way. The actors all do a terrific job playing their roles. My only nitpick was my confusion of why the church looks so much more exquisite than the king’s palace. I understand how the two settings set the mood in contrasting ways, but from an in-lore perspective it’s quite baffling. Admittedly, the film’s deviation from the original folklore’s ending completely changes the whole point of the story for better or worse (in some ways it’s more mature, but in other ways it’s less clever than the original twist of the story). But nitpicks aside, this is a wonderfully dark fable of a movie that was certainly worth the wait.

I will watch anything with Dev Patel and this movie is incredible.

This retelling of the epic Arthurian quest is like nothing you’d imagine or expect. Reminiscent of Kurosawa’s “Dreams,” The Green Knight takes you on a visual, musical, and magical journey to another time and world. This is not your run-of-the-mill film; it’s a breath of fresh air and wildness.

I really liked this movie. It was different, funny at times, thought provoking. It may not be for everyone but it was worth watching to the end, which is a lot more than I can say about a lot of the stuff out there.

An enchanting, gorgeous film. Its surreal, dream-like quality will put off some viewers, but it held me in its grip for the entire runtime. I highly recommend this to anyone even remotely interested in surreal art.

Be sure you’re tripping on something before watching this weird nonsense.

Fantastic art and cinematography. The story and acting are grounded at key times, and really enchanting, mesmerizing, and hypnotic almost at key times as well. The symbolism and world drew me into the story throughout the long runtime and kept me interested through some sections that pure action lovers won't have the patience for. It all comes together to create a very unique style and gives you a feeling that you've never experienced before.

Visually interesting telling of the Arthurian legend. Great performances. This will be boring and confusing to Marvel fanbases and children looking for action and humor quips every 10 minutes. Probably appreciated by people fond of poetic art house style films from the past. The filmmaking was impeccable on so many fronts. One of the very few times I agree with the critics over the audience reviews.

The Green Knight baffled me after the first watch; perhaps watching it at 4 am, I was too tired to fully appreciate its dreamy, slow pace. But on the second viewing, I discovered all the stunning visuals and deep symbolism I apparently slept through the first time. It turns out Dev Patel’s Sir Gawain isn’t just wandering around aimlessly, getting his end away.

Yet another snooze flick from A24. The story was too boring that I end up snoring.

Very boring film, had to quit 40 minutes or so in.

The imagery is genuinely unique and evocative, the set design, and costuming gives the feeling of a half remembered dream: full of feeling, but avoiding a direct meaning. It shows a man who desires to prove his worth, while struggling to maintain his integrity. I found a deep reservoir of anxiety in this film. While there are many literal interpretations of the plot, I find it to be much more About the legend, itself, and knighthood in general. We don't know much about the original source of the story, it has been retold and changed so many times that even the main tale of Arthur is unrecognizable from the original versions, hundreds of years ago. You never truly know why characters make certain actions. Is this just a test by his mother, Morgan La Fey? If so, to what extent? Does he die after credits roll? Are the lord and lady figments of his mother's magic? Is the lord the green knight, testing him? To me, the movie seems to be about getting your own meaning from legends, using them to tell your own stories, with your own meanings. The film is definitely strange, and most casual film goers won't enjoy its lack of truth. But to me, it seems to be a beautiful story ABOUT stories.
