The Innocents Reviews

For all its flaws, The Innocents still manages to be an intriguing and daring psychological horror, based around one very unnerving child indeed.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 3, 2024

The young actors portraying these kids all deliver unexpectedly extraordinary performances. The group epitomizes a generation growing up utterly detached and subdivided.

The second film by Norwegian director Eskil Vogt belongs to a fruitful narrative tradition of children capable of doing evil, even without being fully aware of it. [Full review in Spanish]

The Innocents is a realistic and disturbing approximation to superheroes that explores themes such as friendship or loss of innocence. [Full review in Spanish]

... The screenplay slowly envelops the audience in the web woven by its protagonists. [Full review in Spanish]

Eskil Vogt creates a conducive atmosphere for this haunting thriller that disproportionately unleashes violent acts. [Full review in Spanish]

Each of the child actors performs remarkably well, but in the case of Sam Ashraf/Ben – that criminal mind in which defenselessness and evil pettiness nestle indistinguishably – the acting is superb. [Full review in Spanish]

The Innocents has the particularity of being a thriller with supernatural elements. [Full review in Spanish]

Deeply uncomfortable viewing and as such is bound to elicit some strong opinions. For, despite the title and to quote a certain Queen of Pop, these kids are certainly “not that innocent”.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 13, 2022

The Innocents is schoolyard Scanners with an undercurrent of foreboding that the film really delivers on. It's brilliantly photographed, incredibly well-acted, and gripping.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Nov 2, 2022

An immersive experience that little by little ups the ante with every forbidden game; This is a cruel film, and yet, it has fascinating and ethereal beauty. [Full review in Spanish]

In this story in which parents appear to be mere fixtures and not responsible for their children's behavior, Vogt's suggestions seem capricious and based on provocation. [Full review in Spanish]

The Innocents would provide an excellent fit for a film series involving Scandinavian cinema and supernatural horror.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 1, 2022

This is not a film for apprehensive audiences or cat lovers – as it delves into amoral terrain... exposing the formation of ethics, recognizing good and evil, as well as the need to stand up and fight against the latter. [Full review in Spanish]

It’s lonely and terrifying, and even beyond the larger good vs. evil arc of the film, its smaller moments of nastiness will stick with you long after the movie ends.

There isnt’ a film like The Innocents out there. Hollywood isn’t bold enough and if you think these stories have been told before in “grounded” superhero films such as Chronicle, think again. This is one interesting film.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 31, 2022

Vogt brings out the ugliness of childhood... and ramps it up with endless malice that slowly builds to horrific action.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 25, 2022

A mostly successful examination of the capacity for cruelty that spotlights a talented young cast.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 21, 2022

Sophistication. Depth. And an appreciation for old-fashioned emotion and unexpected heroism. It’s hard to frame The Innocents as a feel-good movie, but there’s much in it that’s ennobling as well as disturbing, and satisfyingly weird.
