The Laundromat Reviews

Apr 22, 2025

Excellent writing. Witty dialogues with breaking the fourth wall. Sometime feels more of an advert than a film, yet this is not disturbing but indeed it makes the overall fictional storytelling more interesting. It's a lot of stories intertwined under the main narrative from Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas. The role of Meryl Streep playing two characters could have been avoided as it gives to the old lady a bigger role than reality, but yet adds an additional twist to the narrative. Overall is great and I will recommend saving it for further references. I will assume that the general public might be disappointed as too brainy - yet Panama papers were indeed pretty brainy.

Confusing, multiple topics mostly related to how to screw the government out of taxes. No acting can save this confusing screen play. My advice don't bother, you will just waste your time. Forget this movie even exists.

I thought it was attempting to be educational regarding economics, but it was much harder to follow than calculus or physics.

The Laundromat - 7/10. As a fan of Steven Soderbergh's work, I'm a little disappointed with the film. It plays really close to the style of storytelling that was used in the far superior film, The Big Short. And I think that's the main problem with this movie. The Panama papers is a highly intriguing subject. So much controversy and so much to talk about, yet, I feel like this movie doesn't dig as deep as it should. The performances are good, but there's one thing that bothered me by the end of the film. I won't give away too much, but a character appears half way through the film, and that character is played like a cartoon caricature. It's a little disappointing, even though I'm aware its a satire film. Overall the film feels like it's missing something, even with huge stars like Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas, and Gary Oldman headlining. Well, once it comes out on Netflix go watch it! It's definitely still a good watch and pretty funny at times!

"God passed a law against greed, but that didn't stop people from breaking it." This 2019 film based on a book exposing the 2016 Panama Papers, which detailed a financial criminal scandal of tax evasions that affected many people In the United States is disliked by critics and by a majority of those who watched it. But for me it was quite enjoyable and informative (brought about Scott Z. Burns' script) and quite stylish and humorous (through Steven Soderbergh's direction), with great performances from Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, and Antonio Banderas. The message of the movie is even better.

This is going to be a very polarizing movie because of its lack of linear storytelling and its use of unusual techniques that may come across as gimmicky to some and inspired to others. While not entirely successful, I give it a firm recommendation because it kept me interested and entertained, and I felt like I learned something about the subject and now want to learn more. I do wish more time had been spent on Streep's Ellen Martin as she is undoubtedly the emotional backbone of the movie. And in juggling several storylines the film doesn't have an opportunity to dig deeper and allow for more insight which may have allowed a little more knowledge for those of us completely in the dark about this topic. And I am not a fan of the ending, which not only breaks the fourth wall, which is done frequently in this movie, but takes us out of the movie altogether - it felt like a stunt. Overall, though, it's a movie I want to see a second time to take it all in.

Considering the cast to work with, it wasn't very funny and mildly entertaining. The content was interesting about insurance companies and the scandals that they create through false claims & organizations

This movie makes no sense. There is no real plot. Wasted time for Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman, which I adore (Antonio Banderas is only famous for his relationship with Melanie Griffith). What a boring movie, it could have been much better.

Loosely inspired by Jake Bernstein's Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite, Steven Soderbergh spins with sharp wit and sharper scorn three stories of money laundering into dapper entertainment that is light at heart but also heavy-handed.

I'm surprised at the other reviews. Aside from having a great cast, I thought the movie was creative in how it portrayed the incidents surrounding the Panama papers and it kept me engaged the whole time.

This movie is a hot mess. Can someone please put Sharon Stone to better use in movies? When it was all over all I really thought was that I wish she got more screen time.

Movie thinks all it needs is this fantastic cast. Movie is wrong.

I like the lightweight direction dealing with the serious stuff, at the same time uneven.

Very good look at The Panama Papers scandal. Of course the Leftist actors & glory hound reporters do their best to demonize the rich, lawyers, politicians, yet don’t, as usual, tell people how to change the system. Until regular people learn to read, lobby, and change laws and politicians, nothing will change. Good for people who want to pay less taxes to corrupt governments and go where they’re treated best. I liked, unironically the vantage of the lawyers, Mossack & Fonseca. They are functionaries, they wrote contracts. They provided a service for a fee. Politicians and those who donate to them created the laws. So, learn to lobby & strike fear into your elected leaders or shut up & go away.

70/100 - Entertaining but hard to ignore the political agenda attached to this movie

Such a bore. What a waste of a good cast and lovely locations. All over the place and stupid "narration." Huge pass

Vale apena assistir? Sim vale, principalmente para nos brasileiros. Nota: 8
