The Martian Reviews

Apr 19, 2025

In my opinion the Martian is one of Matt Damon's best movies. While there are some plot points and problems, there are parts that feel realistic and possible. Even though this movie is mostly set on mars, the movie stays grounded with its use technology. The visuals are stunning, and the character were perfectly chosen for this film.

You can’t get your eyes off this gripping survival story with stunning VFX, The Martian blends science, heart and bit of humor. Matt Damon delivers a top tier performance, making the high-stakes drama both thrilling and entertaining. With sharp storytelling and breathtaking cinematography, Ridley Scott crafts an inspiring film about resilience and teamwork.

an amazing movie that feels a little too long. an hour 35 would have been better.

I love when a Sci-fi film is more science than fiction without being too much of a drab. This movie was great from start to finish. A true hoorah movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Terrific Mars movie. Matt Damon is great as a castaway waiting for his rescue boat to show up.

The Martian Year: 2015 Directed by: Ridley Scott Genres: Science fiction/Action Movie budget: 108 million Duration: 142 min Movie revenues: 604 million A film adaptation based on the novel: The Martian written by Andy Weir. We travel to the year 2035 where a team of astronauts travels to Mars. Trouble arises when the crew gets caught in a very violent sandstorm. One of the crew members is hit by flying debris. His team does their utmost to find him, but due to the heavy storm they have to evacuate. They think Mark did not survive and inform their control center and return to earth with their spaceship Hermes. One of the employees of Nasa notices movement on the satellite images. Nasa soon finds out that Mark Watney is still alive. A veritable media circus ensues. The whole world hopes that Wantey will survive, but the next mission to Mars is not scheduled for another 4 years... This film is a true Science Fiction spectacle. After a few minutes I was completely sucked into the storyline. The visual effects are a joy to watch. You almost get the idea that you are standing on Mars yourself. I have read the novel as well. Often when books are adapted into films, many details are cut from the final script, so the book is always a bit more detailed than the film itself. That can sometimes be a disappointment. Here it is exactly the opposite. The final film is much more spectacular than the book itself. In the book there was more focus on Watney's diary entries and much less on the environment in which he finds himself. My rating ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐/5 stars My rating: 9/10⭐

More efficient, with less flub than the book, The Martian is a great endeavor. The only thing that holds it back for myself are some goofy physical movements and lack of emotional depth. If I were stuck on Mars (and even remotely capable of surviving] I'd be a heck of a lot more emotional.

Such a great rewatchable. Matt Damon nails the “left for dead” schtick.

All Time Classic. Proof a popcorn blockbuster style movie can still be intellectually stimulating. It's a survival style western almost mixed with a Sci-Fi movie and man does it work. The cinematography is beautifully detailed and the red setting of Mars is so vivid and memorable. I could stare at those backgrounds for hours. The pictures are so crisp and detailed too in general. Masterful editing and pacing too. Everything that happens on Mars affects Mission Control and the crew and vice versa. It never feels jumpy at all. Excellent direction by Scott with World building on Mars as well. A hallmark of all his best work and worst. It's perfectly paced despite being a long film which I noticed but didn't mind at all. I wanted to know what happened next more than anything and it does have to go slower but not necessarily Dune (2021) level slow. Just steady the entire way rather. You can't rush the smart plot setup. Excellent but subtle score also thats memorable along with the cheeky disco tracks. Odd but works and is super memorable. The special effects are top notch as well. Acting is really good overall but if there is one slight issue it's here. Damon is excellent carrying this. Chastain is a standout too. Everyone else is really good but there isn't much character to and the dialouge does have a hint of Marvel style humor to it but it works. This is never dry at all and the science babble is pretty easy to understand and unlike Interstellar it's very visually heavy. You could easily watch this with no sound and follow the entire thing. Everyoen should give this a try once.

the martian is an outstanding movie where a man is stranded on mars from his expedition group leaving him there because they thought he died and he has to survive Intel He gets picked up again. i love how he uses critical thinking to find solutions to problems and that happen or just to make his area better. he has a good sense of humor and the actors are phenomenal.

Scott should rely more on movies like the martian than on historical epics. He is far more capable to do good to them.

So, this was a movie I skipped in theaters because the trailer to me just did not look good at all. I said it looked stupid and had no intent to see it. I've been hoping this comes back into theaters just because they wanted to put it out because wow was I wrong. I rented this movie around spring 2016 with another movie. I fell in love within minutes. This has become the movie I thought would be the dumbest thing ever because of the trailer to a movie I can put on literally whenever. It's become my comfort movie. And this is a movie I do recommend to people when asked for a movie recommendation. It's honestly the first movie I say when asked. It's become a favorite of mine. I won't stop recommending this. I'll show it to my kids if I ever have any. And I'll continue telling friends to give it a watch. Also, highly recommend the book if you haven't read it. If you don't want a physical but still want to listen to it, get it on Audible so you get Wil Wheaton narrating it because he is a treasure.
