The Outfit Reviews

A slippery tale of a Chicago tailor grappling with the mob plays fast and loose with gangster movie stereotypes.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 17, 2025

For a debut feature, The Outfit is confident, assured, and as well designed as one of Burling’s suits. If you can forgive some of the more silly developments and enjoy Rylance’s performance, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here.

| Original Score: A | Apr 25, 2024

Rylance carries the character study convincingly, projecting flashes of emotional insight across his face while maintaining his character’s mystery. If viewers walk away dissatisfied with the answers to Leonard’s past, they will not blame Rylance.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 16, 2023

If you’re in the mood for a smart drama with mystery, finesse, and a shocking amount of heart, odds are you’ll enjoy the smooth, swift ride The Outfit takes you on.

| Original Score: 80/100 | Aug 10, 2023

Flat out don’t sleep on #TheOutfit a knockout thriller that keeps you in suspense from beginning to the very end. Mark Rylance is the god damn man in this film. Might be a bit too long but honestly that’s just me nitpicking at that point

The Outfit is an intriguing thriller that makes the most of its 50s setting and contains an array of strong performances, particularly Mark Rylance in the lead. At 106 minutes it manages to cram numerous twists and turns without feeling overly complex

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 19, 2023

It's a gripping tale of Chicago mobsters and one tailor who might just be smarter than all of them. If you've been watching movies over the last decade, you already know that any time Mark Rylance is in a film it's a must see...

| Original Score: 8/10 | Dec 30, 2022

The Outfit was such an entertaining time! So many layers to characters that you would never imagine to be invested in but finding yourself honed into the story. Mark Rylance yet again proving how well he owns any character he takes on. A pleasant surprise

| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Dec 26, 2022

The screenplay fits several crafty plot twists into that confined space, and Rylance’s performance is a compelling centerpiece.

Writer-Director Grahame Moore has fashioned a thriller that everything and everyone might not be what they seam… Like the best suits from Savile Row, The Outfit is a cut above. Put together with the rarest skill and with a surprise or two up its sleeve.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 13, 2022

In a context where it would be pretty difficult to express any sentiment without heavy dialogue, Rylance pulls through with a comforting reassurance and a very communicative gaze.

A breath of fresh air with aromas from the past, among many scents of remakes, sequels and franchises. [Full review in Spanish]

The Outfit is a film that accelerates the pulse, not the pupils. [Full review in Spanish]

Replete with a host of enjoyable plot contortions...the film probably would have been terrific anyway, but Rylance anchors the whole thing with a richly nuanced performance that really does demonstrate something very real about first impressions.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 23, 2022

Moore gives us a threadbare patchwork quilt of a chamber mystery with all its theatrical seams showing.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 8, 2022

The Outfit is a well-crafted, engaging story that will keep you guessing until the very end.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Jun 24, 2022

If Mark Rylance wasn’t one of the world’s best actors, I’m convinced he would be one of the world’s best poker players.

It is sturdy storytelling that weaves a complicated yet fascinating trail of clues that's a joy to discover.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Jun 8, 2022

... theatrical and like an experiment with pretense. [Full review in Spanish]

May abuse of plot twists in the final stretch (the last one may be expendable), but it owns a marvelous theatrical style, masters a less-is-more suspense, and knows how to move brilliantly in tight spaces... [Full review in Spanish]
