The Unholy Reviews
It's a credit to Brown, Morgan, and Sadler that the story works at all. These actors maintain the illusion that The Unholy is a competent horror movie for far longer than it deserves.

It's not all bad, but it's not much good.

Coming out on the high heels of Lil Nas X's controversial "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)," this devil's tale feels laughably tame.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Apr 5, 2021
The Unholy is not designed to be deep, but since glimmers of depth are present, the lack of follow-up makes this a disappointing watch.

The Unholy has the stately aura (and endless speechifying) of a sermon, but it's really a creaky nothing of a B-movie, like a chintzy Halloween exhibit set up inside an old church.

Has an intriguing premise but cuts too many corners in its catechism.

The latest entry in religious horror commits the cardinal sin of inducing boredom by way of tired tropes and cheap jump scares.

Spiliotopoulos never matches the film's grounded themes with the eerie tone needed to convey old-world superstitions and church rituals for psychological gashes... "The Unholy" is a few Hail Marys short of a winning formula.

The script's many many shortcomings would perhaps be easier to forgive if the visuals were a little less shoddy, something that stings even more when one glances to the credits and sees producer Sam Raimi's name.

Playing the evil entity with convulsive movements and a killer manicure, the contortionist Marina Mazepa turns in the movie's most entertaining performance. That's if you don't count Morgan looking genuinely baffled as to what he's doing here at all.

Adapting James Herbert's 1983 novel Shrine, filmmaker Evan Spiliotopoulos turns a potentially compelling examination of faith and mass hysteria into a by-the-numbers jump-scare effort.

After an intriguing setup that takes its time building atmosphere and characters, declining to rush the first death, the film becomes progressively more overwrought and hokey.

"The Unholy" has a religious plot that actually works for it.
