The Unholy Reviews
A less than average religious horror film, held up by a strong performance by the lead actor. Poor CGI and lack of jumpscares let the film down massively, but some strong performances kept me wanting to see the film out. I won't watch this movie again, but I have certainly seen much worse. The plot, in theory, could have worked so much better, but terrible cgi and some silly plot twists really let the film down. The cinematography was impressive, the setting was beautiful and there was some pretty cool scenes but ultimately, all in all, a tired premise with little to no originality. Worth a watch if you're into religious horror but don't expect any sleepless nights.
JDM deserves bigger budget films. Nice direction and the DOP knows his business. Give those 3 more money! CGI ropey. A well paced largely watchable 90 mins.
As an avid horror film fan, I regret spending time watching this. I saw nothig unique nor good. Should've read reviews beforehand.
Highlight of the movie is Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character flipping over a table to stop the demon. "The Unholy" has a great horror opening taking place in 1845, as we see an unknown woman's point of view as a mask gets nailed to face while being accused of witchcraft. After the great start it falls flat & ends up being another predictable run of the mill horror that doesn't take advantage of a good premise & offers very little. The interesting aspect of this demonic entity using the faith of others to grow stronger is never fully taken advantage of as previously mentioned, as like many cheap horrors it relies too heavily on bad & often pointless jump scares even having two within a few seconds of it each other killing any little suspense. Just think of every horror trope that's made by people who don't care & it's in this film, burning crosses, blood pouring from eyes of a statue and statues under a blanket, but wait something evil could be under the blanket. It's a shame as the casting is good with Jeffrey Dean Morgan & Cricket Brown giving good performances.
Matthew 7:15... I don't understand the negative ratings here. I watch movies to leave reality for a little while. If you like horror movies the way I do, then you know that only 1 or 2 out of 10 is actually a good movie... even fewer are GREAT movies. This IS a good movie. While some of the plotlines may have been done before, it's nice to see a movie that isn't a remake (soooo many remakes lately). If you are into horror movies, you won't be wasting your time on this one. Give it a try...
I hated this movie so much I created an account just to give it a bad review. The movie is so desperate to create a movie with religious horror it is laughable. The graphics are awful, the plot isn't that good, and the concept of people thinking they are worshipping Mary instead of an evil spirit was executed so poorly.
Boring and flat. The plot was interesting, but unfortunately it was poorly executed. The ghost of Mary had the potential to be scary had the special effects used not made it so laughable combined with JDM’s terrible reactions. How did the better actors end up with such small roles but then JDM as the lead?! Stop giving this man and his jacket lead roles. He should be playing the asshole co-worker named Greg, no last name, who takes your reserved parking spot at work and then leaves the office early to go golfing with the boss and nothing more. This movie is at best a decent background noise movie, equivalent to a lifetime movie (I’d prefer the lifetime movie). It’s something to have playing with the captions on while you’re at the nail or hair salon, or like myself, cleaning litter boxes and playing games on my phone.
Produced by Sam Raimi, 2021's 'The Unholy' promised a lot but could it deliver? SYNOPSIS: 'A hearing-impaired girl is visited by the Virgin Mary and can suddenly hear, speak, and heal the sick. As people flock to witness her miracles, terrifying events unfold.' Carried heavily by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, 'The Unholy' joins the every growing list of disappointing and forgettable horror movies that use Christianity as the crux of the plot. Unfortunately, you've seen most of this before, and maybe in better films. Morgan is the highlight of the film but when he's not on screen the films really does lose it's way. Which is a shame really. One for hardened followers of the horror genre. 6/10
This film has a unique message that I haven't seen in any other film. (including jumpscares & creepiness)
Decent religious horror flick with some good jump scares & dissappointing cgi effects.
Awful, story was basic and you could see the "twist" or surprise coming from a mile away. It wasn't scary or fun. It's just a bad movie. Also the acting and special effects are both atrocious.
For me, this film was more of a hit than a miss. Having watched a host of recent horror films that were at best uninspirational this little number held the interest and the action was consistent if not always intense. While on the one hand, the film quality screamed budget this did not affect the acting quality, special effects, or action, these crucial elements remained intact. Although billed as horror the feature is a horror with a moral message rather than simply presenting the dark side to shock and this sets it apart. It is not a film that begs a sequel but a stand-alone feature that is able to hold its own throughout the running length. A very enjoyable, somewhat original, and thought-provoking movie. Good acting, a suitable climax, and above all highly entertaining. Not gross or indecent just simply a great story with a good few twists and turns. Sometimes obvious but never too dull.
The plot was so predictable that the only thing i didn't see coming was when I ran out of popcorn. Shocker, he cries with the girl in his arms and she gets revived, no one saw that coming. Saw in theaters and was very disappointed.
Terrible plot and terrible special effects. Don't waste your time
Awful.. there's no other way to describe it but awful
Waste of time Like being kicked in the nuts by a soggy biscuit
I honestly don't understand where they got that this movie is anti-Catholic in any way. It most definitely isn't. In any case, it's simply weak.
