They/Them Reviews

Profoundly misguided...

| Original Score: D- | Mar 6, 2024

There is little redeeming value to They/Them. It fails as an escapist slasher flick for queer kids to vicariously live through, and it doesn’t make a strong case for dismantling conversion camps.

| Jul 24, 2023

They/Them isn’t really what I was expecting, but as somebody who has little interest generally in horror and even less experience watching it, I was ultimately glad for the kind of movie that it wound up being.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Jan 4, 2023

It comes off like the filmmaker had no idea what kind of story he wanted to create around his capable cast.

| Dec 6, 2022

There are films to be made about the clash between reconciliation and retribution, but given how methodical They/Them is in laying out the dehumanizing process of unmaking someone, this isn’t the place for it.

They/Them is a captivating institutional drama that bleeds hard in the right places.

| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Oct 4, 2022

It boasts some wonderfully written scenes with a number of very talented performers, but the thematic issues, a few major plot and structure issues, and an ending that is inexplicably bad undercut what is otherwise a promising film.

They/Them, on the outside, might seem like it has the potential to be a fun queer slasher, but the reality is sadly much darker. This is a morally disturbing feature that is not only gross but is also terrible when it comes to being a slasher.

If you get aggravated when characters fail to follow the simplest don’t-do-that conventions, this still conjures crowd-pleasing results.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 25, 2022

This rogue lion melodrama either needs to be a whole lot smarter -- and not hang its plot on people acting in idiotic ways. Or it needs to embrace the stupid and stop trying to be a good film.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 25, 2022

They/Them is definitely worth a look.

With a playful name like They/Them, I thought we would get a film that empowers the community and gets to revel in the strength and power that is being queer and trans. Instead, it’s about being polite.

| Original Score: C | Aug 19, 2022

Lots of punniness in this scattershot and ambitious horror film, which depicts the horrors of gay conversion therapy as scarier and more horrific than the story's slasher elements.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 19, 2022

I had hopes that They/Them was going to have more creativity and surprises in store. Unfortunately, what is set up as a genuinely horrific exploration of conversion therapy is completely unraveled by the painfully generic slasher elements.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 18, 2022

The parts are greater than the whole in They/Them, a messy pseudo-slasher with a major identity crisis that has its heart in the right place.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 17, 2022

Oscar-nominated writer John Logan wrote and directed this queer thriller, which works both as a chilling genre film and a fascinating psychological character study.

| Original Score: B- | Aug 16, 2022

As a whole, They/Them is basically an awkward, non-self-aware mishmash of homophobia and obligatory horror tropes doled out by the bucketful... I’m sure there’s a way to do it well. But this ain’t it.

| Aug 15, 2022

While the execution is messy, They/Them is an intriguing, albeit not entirely successful consideration of trauma and the merits of violence. The politics of the ending are divisive, but the resulting dialogue is worth exploring.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 12, 2022

They/Them is a rather dull slasher flick with too much and too little going on simultaneously. Kevin Bacon makes a welcome appearance, and the first quarter shows promise, but the slasher element gets buried beneath too many dramatic subplots.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Aug 12, 2022

Ironically and unfortunately, They/Them itself seems to be one suffering from an identity crisis. The film’s tone is all over the place and never meshes together in a cohesive way.
