Trap Reviews

“Trap” might not make much sense, but it is at its delightful best when it casts off any expectations of morality. Sometimes it’s good to watch a man be bad.

| Apr 13, 2025

It is nonsense, and for the most part it is particularly humourless nonsense.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Apr 8, 2025

I can’t say this is the worst movie of 2024, but it has some of the worst dialogue I have heard by far. I think different sections of this journey might've made a stronger short film.

Trap is not without its deeper dimensions. The surface is all thrills and chills, but slowly in his script Shyamalan also interweaves this rumination on identity.

The performances from both [Josh Hartnett and Alison Pill] are just stellar – so much tension and emotional stakes. Hartnett also delivers the best pie acting since James Franco in Spider-Man 3.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 26, 2024

The highlight of the whole film might be the bit part played by Kid Cudi in absolute diva/bitch mode.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 20, 2024

Trap is better than most of the Shyamalan nonsense routinely foisted on us over the past quarter-century, although its entertainment value doubtless increases if one enters the arena completely clueless.

... follows that same path of fascinating idea whose best parts are worth turning over in one’s mind, dissecting them to see how they’re constructed and executed, even as the weaker bolts and support pieces threaten to buckle under the inspiration.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 5, 2024

Trap offers up an intriguing scenario & a compelling first half... but unfortunately the second half descends into quite a bit of silliness that will have you rolling your eyes as the story spirals off into some rather ridiculous directions.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 4, 2024

Trap has some problems, but it’s a fun suspense thriller that kept me engaged right through to the credits.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 4, 2024

In a world full of dull filmmakers, it's fun to have a consistently infuriating one.

| Original Score: C | Oct 31, 2024

It’s a problem when you rule at ideas and stink at stories.

| Original Score: C+ | Oct 28, 2024

["Trap"] is a phenomenally filmed psychological thriller that’s equal parts tragic character study, concert film, and inverse detective story neatly rolled into one fantastic joint.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Oct 6, 2024

As a thriller it's a 2, as a comedy, it's a 4. A 3-star Shyamalan for the ages.

Trap is an entertaining thriller, with Josh Hartnett truly carrying this one the entire way through. On a script and screenplay level, some it worked, some didn’t. But one thing about Shyamalan to his credit, he throws the kitchen sink every time.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 18, 2024

While Shyamalan has an eye for a Hitchcockian “aha” moment and a great sense of suspense, he stretches willing suspension of disbelief just a little too far, making Trap more of an acting showcase than a thriller masterclass.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 17, 2024

Trap is ingenious as a genre film, but it doesn’t go much farther than that. It comes off as more of an exercise than one of the director’s metaphysical outings.

| Sep 16, 2024

The entire plot is silly and unbelievable, and each twist is increasingly absurd. This movie is more of an exercise in twists than storytelling. Surprisingly, however, I found Shyamalan's twist obsession to be quite entertaining this time around.

| Original Score: C+ | Sep 15, 2024

At its worst, a fun premise devolved into an incoherent puzzler. At best, a strangely moving exploration of parenthood and work/life balance.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Sep 11, 2024

Shyamalan is completely in control of this brilliantly confined thriller, as you can tell he’s operating at a level of glee and mastery we haven’t seen from him since his heyday.
