Umma Reviews
The plot was so simple and bizarre, it was like if a low effort kid's movie attempting to address generational trauma, but with bees and electricity? Really cool idea with a talented cast, but beyond cringey execution.
Umma proves that there's truly nothing more terrifying than one's own terrible mother. Interesting enough concept but I think it would have been much better if they didn't lean so much into the paranormal aspect. I was 100% expecting everything to exist solely in Oh's head and when the film started moving away from that psychological aspect, I felt a little let down. Overall it was a decent enough movie that kept me on edge, the jump scares eliciting some fairly loud screams in reaction, but I feel like it would have been considerably better without any paranormal elements. A psychological thriller where Umma exists solely within Sandra Oh's head would have made this much more memorable.
I watched this because I always come across it while browsing and it stands out as a horror film I haven’t seen that’s in the ‘new & popular’ category. Competently average in most regards but lacking depth and a plot. It’s as close to being a horror movie about nothing as a horror movie can get.. but no one is laughing.
I don’t even know where to start. Just horrible, really. Excruciatingly slow. Plot was weak, visual effects looked like they were from the early 2000’s, and the acting made it impossible to stay interested. I wish I could say I turned it off halfway through and saved myself the wasted time. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
So so bad...non-sense, no explanations, bees, electricity and Korea so wrongly mixed together..
Fell asleep 3 different times trying to finish this movie. Horror film? More like a bed time story…
Olvidable.
I'm easily spooked and this had no effect on me. The jump scares didn't even "get" me. So if your looking for a horro or thriller you may want to look else where, as this is neither thrilling nor horrifying.
a nice film to pass the time with, have some really nice scenes
Whilst this film may not have been what I was expecting, it is certainly an enjoying and unique take on horror that we know; despite the fact that it borders more on suspense than horror, but I digress. This film delves into mother-daughter relationships and truly reminds us that life is messy and oftentimes scary. Visually 'Umma' is an easy watch, different angles and whirling camera shots really work to make this film; on a production perspective, this film is of quality and sound design stands out superbly. I firmly believe that this film has recieved too much negative backlash and at least, unlike many other horrors, it as a conclusive end.
this movie was atrocious. i have never watched a movie this boring and bland. i hated every minute of it and i wish i didn't watch this garbage. i was waiting with a burning passion for this uninteresting and off-putting so called "movie" to end.
Could have done so much more with it. Did have actual horror to it by the end, but more an interesting watch for the first hour.
Sam Raimi returned in 2022 to produce the horror thriller 'Umma'. SYNOPSIS: 'Despite its flaws, Umma is an impressive debut for Shim, the kind of outing that hints at plenty more under the hood or tucked inside a massive suitcase, just bursting with secrets.' 'Umma' is a film with many flaws, many of which are around its clichéd approach to storytelling. However, director Shim is making his debut here so he probably wanted to play safe to impress his more illustrious producer. If your expectations aren't that high, even though the impressive Sandra Oh is excellent here, this film does deliver a spooky atmosphere, tension, dizzying camerawork and just about enough jump scares. 'Umma' is a lukewarm film carried by its lead actress, but for her performance alone it's worth a look. 6/10
What a load of rubbish. Not scary at all. Most of film is filmed in the dark. Difficult to see what is going on.
it's a good movie, some parts are really confusing cause like something happens and it makes you feel like you missed a part. but overall not bad
While I started watching the movie with high expectations, I must say that it was disappointing and boring. While some themes and elements were intelligently brought in the story, at the end the execution of the plot was done poorly, not resembling a horror movie not even a thriller. It was more like a drama; and a really slow-paced one. I would not recommend it to someone who wants to watch horror.
Cam prea putin horror
I watched Umma simply on the premise that I think Sandra Oh is a good actress AND because we're both from Toronto! But this film fell a bit short of what I was hoping it would be. It could have been better.
I watched this because of Sam Raimi as producer but it was a dissapointment. Probably a contenter for the worst movie of 2022.
