Uncle Drew Reviews
Corny, formulaic and unoriginal for sure, but not a terrible way to spend 100 minutes. Not bad for movie inspired by a prankish series of Pepsi commercials.

The laughs aren’t consistent or as big as you would hope, but offers enough for a mild recommendation.

Uncle Drew uses a shallow interpretation of race, never explicitly showing experiences specific to Black men.

I didn't find it funny, but it was generally pleasant and inoffensive.

For a sports movie based on a commercial, there's more swishes than misses here.

Never trying to be anything other than it says on the tin, it's an hour and a half of clichéd entertainment.

[It's] little more than a dismissive diversion -- with product placement to spare.

What laughs there are come mainly from Lil Rel Howery as the short, put-upon coach and Nick Kroll as a rival player constantly winding him up.

Go sit down in a cool theater for a nice light summer sport comedy that will have you yelling "BUCKETS!" while you laugh a lot.

Despite some laughs, this basketball movie misses and misses
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 8, 2019
Basketball players pretend to be old people for 2 hours. Aside from a few quips, that's the whole joke. Oh, and plenty of product placements.

Uncle Drew means to be a warm and feel-good film but the thoughtlessness with which the film is put together betrays its intentions.

It was always an uphill climb to transform a 30 second Super Bowl ad into a feature film but with a good script this could have worked.
| Original Score: 3/10 | Feb 27, 2019
Uncle Drew isn't much narratively. There's not a lot of surprise or structure. But the basketball stuff is solid and watching athletes act is always a delight, while the performances of Howery, Irving and Kroll help raise the bar a bit.

A cheery ray of positivity and a delightful summertime surprise in the sports film genre.

I suppose if you have a cast that's game for anything, and a script that makes people laugh - anything is possible.
| Original Score: B | Oct 11, 2018
The movie does delve into some cliches in its runtime, making it easy to write it off. But if you're game, this movie is an enjoyable summer comedy.

Mad predictable.

Everything was stale.

A fun little movie that's not perfect...will I watch it any time soon? Probably not.
