Uptown Girls Reviews
This movie is such an underrated movie and I can't believe I was so late to watch it. The people rating it terribly probably aren't seeing it from a younger perspective, but their perspective is also interesting to view from. This movie highlights the struggles of adulthood and growing up in a more lighthearted way. The struggles the main character goes through (getting evicted, heartbreak, loosing friend and money), show how tough being an adult is, yet she meets a child who is even more adult than her. They both grow with each other, the main character becomes more mature while the child becomes more childlike. For me personally, this movie made me cry because it reminds me of loosing my relationship with my childhood self, and watching the inner child in me grow up. It shows how life is insanely hard, and your being forced to go through with it. This movie is slightly predictable, but honestly, if the plot didn't happen, the movie would not have such meaning from it. The script is slightly underdone, I agree with that, but the meaning isn't really shown in the direct dialogue of the movie, but through the actions. The symbolization of Coney Island and the spinning tea cup scene where they both realize how similar they are entirely, despite the completely different personality and ages, and it shows how life can affect everyone. Also the scene where Molly breaks it off with Neal isn't that bad of dialogue and many people can relate to the meaning it says. It isn't your average teenager movie, but its an adult movie that really only growing adults could really relate to, its about finding the inner light within yourself when the rest of the world is covered in darkness. It breaks my heart to see the reviews being so harsh, but I completely respect their opinions and they are valid even though my interpretation was completely different coming from someone who is younger than most of these critics. I will take a point off because the plot is quite predictable and that I agree with that.
The critics rly dont know what theyre talking about!! a predictable comedy??? Whatever. Loved this movie.
I cry so much everytime, it’s soooo good! The critics didn’t get it this time
The rest of the critics did not understand the movie. Women that did not have mother or father in their lives growing up or women that have felt abandonment would understand the movie. Yes , it’s a funny movie. however , this movie is mainly focused on a message that is supposed to be deep and true to the heart. I loved this movie when I was a little kid and 15 years later I still love it and it still makes me cry. 🤷🏼♀️
Dakota Fanning, best child actress of ALL TIME. I don't understand how she got no nominations for this role, she was incredible. Brittany Murphy got no business being dead It's such a good music, I'll never understand why the reviews are so low. Very touching story. The last 30 minutes are so goddamn sad but also not really. I hadn't watched this movie since like 2010 and all I remembered was the tea cup scene, Dakota Fanning and Brittany Murphy being amazing, the comatose dad and the movie somehow making me really sad. I will say, the Neal plotline stops this movie from being a 5 stars. I hated everything about his character. I was so happy to see Molly tell him off cauz yeah him just using her as a muse is gross! I don't care that he bought her dad's guitars, I hope that she doesn't go back to him
This is an insanely beautiful movie about grief and what it means to grow up and deal with your problems and it's all wrapped up in a fun and sweet showcase of girlhood- every time I've watched it over the last 20 years I've cried!
So underrated, don’t listen to the critics on this one. It is a beautiful and moving exploration of girlhood that was ahead of its time. If you need a movie to heal your inner child this is the one!
i can't believe i slept on this movie for so long. i don't get why the score are so low, this movie was so well written and moving
Absolutely pains me how critics have scored this film so low, because upon a recent re-watch, I found it to be a brilliant, heartfelt exploration of grief, healing, friendship, and the pitfalls of self-actualization and "adulting," as the grown up kids are referring to it these days. Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning are both fantastic in their respective roles, believably playing a childish adult and an adultish child at constant odds, who are learning from each other how to grow and heal from the things that hurt them. Their chemistry feels so natural between them and that makes both the comedic and sentimental bits involving them shine all the more. The teacup scene towards the end lives in my head rent-free, driving home that this film is not simply a silly buddy comedy but as a tale of both healing your inner child after years of suppressing your heartbreak and grief, and using your own life experience to help others heal in turn. This movie has become another go-to on my list of "chick flick" comfort films. Brittany Murphy's talent and charm was underappreciated in her time, but I'm happy to know that others nowadays have come around to really appreciate her and her body of work.
A gorgeous film with fantastic acting from Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning, both of whom make engaging, spirited and multifaceted characters. The storyline makes for a heart warming and inspiring experience. I aso love this film for its set design, costuming and soundtrack.
It baffles me how critics dismissed Uptown Girls as fluff, failing to see the heart and soul of the story. Yes, it’s quirky and whimsical, but beneath that lies a deeply emotional narrative about loss, responsibility, and finding a sense of self. The film’s exploration of grief and the complexities of growing up—whether as a child forced to grow up too fast or an adult stuck in a childlike state—is poignant and relatable. Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning deliver performances that are nothing short of magnetic, their chemistry anchoring the film in sincerity. Critics love to write off films like this because they’re not “deep” enough by their rigid, self-important standards, but not every good story needs to be drenched in cynicism. Uptown Girls is a feel-good film with layers, and if you’re willing to look past the pretense of needing everything to be edgy or groundbreaking, you’ll find a touching, beautifully acted story that doesn’t deserve the scorn it’s received. Sometimes, joy and emotion are enough.
I loved this movie. Is a classic, the story issss amazing! I cried a lot at the end.
Excellent performances, costume and set design. A precious piece of art centering a woman and a young girl and the experience of losing a parent too young. So many of these poor reviews are more a reflection of a woman-hating culture than it is of the film itself. The writing also portrays a critical look at toxic young men while even giving him a decent arc. RIP britney Murphy the world didn't deserve you.
Looking at these reviews is making me wonder if we've all seen the same movie to everyone who didn't like i don't want to be cheesy but you just don't get it I recommend a rewatch after you've deal with grief this movie just shows you the ways that being by death can eat away people and what its like to be and feel alone in the world at a young age and an adult but this movie made me cry as someone who's hates crying it suppose it made me feel seen but I'm sure I'd love it with a different perspective as well I HIGHLY RECOMMEND !!
this movie having a 13% should make them all rot in jail this movie changed my life
The greatest movie to ever exist. My comfort movie.
