Wasp Network Reviews
Regardless of the lack of stakes, it is still hard to imagine that given the talent involved, Wasp Network is not better just by pure force of personality.

Wasp Network had the makings of a smash hit with its fascinating story and all-star cast, but unfortunately the story becomes incoherent and convoluted under the weight of its own ambition.

I can’t deny the film’s faults, especially for those with no familiarity with the true events whatsoever. So take my advice – do some quick reading on the backstory before watching. It will lessen the confusion and open up a lot of what Assayas is doing.

Only a third-party director like Assayas, who exists outside of the political dichotomy of Cuba and the United States, could have made this film without taking sides

Wasp Network is a messy, although pretty, missed opportunity.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 21, 2021
[Wasp Network] is a narrative mess, a nearly incomprehensible rabble of names, dates and acronyms jumbled together.

Some really shoddy storytelling. The film both moves too quickly and, at times, not at all.

Feels like a crash course in names, dates, and summaries of espionage operations.

Director Olivier Assayas offers a political thriller that's rich in detail, but primarily invested in human cost.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 9, 2020
Wasp Network is a haphazard film that can feel like less than the sum of its often glittering parts. But it unsheathes its sting just often enough to keep you on your toes.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 22, 2020
Perfunctory and unengaging. It presents its historical events with little actual sense as to its larger context.

It's a truly disappointing spy thriller that ends up being as flat as a plane's wing with its tedious spy narrative and multiple hollow characters. [Full review in Spanish]

... tangles itself in a plot transferred to the screen with the shopworn conventions associated with the American cinema.

The cast is outstanding, but Alma aside, they are all Hispanic, not Cuban, and as such they are all over the place with their accents and credibility. [Full Review in Spanish]

Weak spy drama has strong language, brief nudity.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 17, 2020
Wasp Network requires acceptance of disparate threads that do, by film's end, weave together in an illuminating historical depiction.

Here, though less electric, he is a sturdy presence, effortlessly conveying that almost matter-of-fact rationality characteristic of Assayas's dialogue. The film as a whole is equally direct in mood, though not in structure, where it is discursive.

Olivier Assayas tells the story skilfully, with a superb cast and top-notch production values.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jul 2, 2020
There's some interesting history on display in Wasp Network, the latest from veteran French auteur Oliver Assayas. But as drama this one's a head scratcher.

Despite its inability to reach grander heights, The Wasp Network offers an assured portrait of a largely unheralded chapter in the Cuban Revolution's long-winded history.
