When Evil Lurks Reviews
...progressively uninvolving and underwhelming...
| Original Score: 1/4 | Aug 7, 2024
When Evil Lurks does so well in creating threatening situations and with its stomach churning violence and gruesome detail. The acting is some of the best I’ve seen in the horror genre for a long time. Their fear, distress and actions were all believable.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 22, 2024
Defiantly crossing several lines even the most twisted of films in the genre wouldn’t dare step over, and coursing with a helpless, hopeless feeling, When Evil Lurks has the makings of a new high-mark for horror, for those who can stomach it at least.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 13, 2024
When Evil Lurks is a powerhouse of a possession film, [...] cementing Demián Rugna further as an absolute master of horror in the making.

In addition to aspects such as effects, the film is especially interesting from a narrative point of view, as it shows how people ignore problems or make them even worse with their actions. [Full review in Spanish]

I fully understand that this has been Rugna's creative intention and a hallmark of the work, but for me, a horror movie needs more than constant exposure to brutality to make me feel anything other than exhaustion.

Demián Rugna's fifth feature is a sweet treat for lovers of the genre that isn't suitable for all stomachs. [Full review in Spanish]

Rugna utilizes the usual demonic possession tropes, but in unique ways to ensure his mythology captivates on a purely visceral and aesthetic level.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Jan 19, 2024
This is a modest production, which makes the tremendous cascade of grotesque and unpleasant scenes much more impressive. [Full review in Spanish]

When Evil Lurks has unusual courage in today's horror, not so much because of where it dares to go but because of its original premise which evokes a scenario with hypotheticals yet it fails to develop them with elegance... [Full review in Spanish]

Without a doubt, the film by Argentinian Demián Rugna is one of the most disturbing experiences we've seen in film, but also one of the most contradictory. [Full review in Spanish]

While the premise is strong, the execution isn't. When Evil Lurks is full of so many unbelievable characters that it drags the film down.

Demián Rugna's 'When Evil Lurks' is the winner of the Sitges Film Festival 2023 and there is no shortage of reasons. Merciless, brutal and uncomfortable, it is perhaps one of the best horror films in a year. [Full Review in Spanish]

When Evil Lurks not only satisfies the hungriest gorehound, it also brilliantly builds a world I was completely intrigued by.

A mean-spirited, nasty piece of work, and I mean that as a compliment.
