When Evil Lurks Reviews
The most interesting thing about When Evil Lurks is its ambition to become more and more. It is not afraid to increase the dose of terror and exaggeration, causing a truly disturbing and rewarding impact for its scale based on fear. Even if, at times, its characters are not willing to receive the pity or compassion of the viewer.
It's fine, but not great. I watched it because I heard the plot line with the autistic kid was interesting, which it was. The makeup etc. was pretty good, and so was the concept of a demon plague. It was confusing in parts, especially since they took ages to explain anything. But what really annoyed me was that most of the movie's problems was caused by the main characters being idiots. An infection of demonic possession should feel like overwhelming odds, but the plot was driven by stupidity instead of horror. The world didn't feel post-apocalyptic even though the plague had been going on for years (everyone was living normally, with electric lights and all that), and none of the characters followed the rules about handling demons that they were all supposed to know. So it didn't really hit.
One of the best horror movies in recent years.
An horror movie like none other.
Great film got right into the suspense, and wasn't afraid to be graphic or take risks with characters most modern horror movies have a tendency to avoid. All characters were very well written and there was no unnecessary exposition that normally leaves me feeling detached from those films that are 'dumbed down'. This film understood that the audience would be able to make connections on their own and didn't need things pointing out for them at every opportunity, which not only kept my attention the whole time but also made me feel more personally involved with what was going on. Kept me questioning but intrigued the whole time, would recommend.
Great acting and very gory!
Dark and excellently paced. A really well constructed horror that doesn't spare your discomfort.
Stunningly shocking, with an insidious and horrifying despair that presses inevitably on both the characters and the viewer. While the actions and choices of all of the male protagonists in this film may have you tearing your hair out with frustration, the lengths to which this film plays on that trope, speaks volumes about the terrifying impotence of female wisdom in the face of male violence.
Okay, When Evil Lurks is one of the most unsettling horror movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s an Argentinian film about a rural town dealing with a bizarre, horrifying demonic infection. But unlike typical possession movies, this one doesn’t play by the usual rules. There’s no slow buildup to terror—it just throws you right into the nightmare. The demons in this movie don’t just creep around in shadows. They infect people, turning them into something truly horrifying. The way the possession spreads is unpredictable and disturbing, and the film is full of brutal, shocking moments that made my jaw drop. There are scenes I’ll probably never forget—some of them are that twisted. What makes it worse (in the best way possible) is that there’s no safe place. You’re constantly on edge, wondering who’s next, and the film doesn’t give you much time to breathe. The cinematography is raw and realistic, which makes everything feel even more unsettling. If you liked Hereditary or The Witch, but want something even darker, this is your movie.
Great movie, the general vibe slightly reminded me of The last of us. I see a lot of complains regarding characters decisions, but I think the premise already explains everything if you pay attention...
I like this original folk-based horror and I would rank it high up there after Hereditary. I like the original story, the cinematic shots, and the believable acting.
O Pedro é burro pra caralho, vai toma no cu, fudeu todo o filme.
Good movie to show grandma right before she passes into the afterlife
The movie was fun, but the end its stupid. I don't recommend this one if you are a real lover of terror. So simple, and its so stupid the script cause in the end i finished hating the principal role, cause he is acting all the time like a dumb. Terrible, guion pesimo, final malisimo, y termine odiando al personaje principal porque es un tarado (el personaje)
This isn’t a film that keeps you on the edge of your seat; instead, it has you recoiling in shock at what unfolds on screen. The main character’s reactions may be questionable, but the story is masterfully structured. Every character’s decisions feel deliberate, driving the plot forward while adding depth and offering profound insight into their personalities. Unlike many films that falter in this area, this one excels, delivering a truly immersive experience. It’s easily one of the most jarring and unforgettable films I’ve seen in a long time.
Another Shudder masterpiece, this is a improbable scary masterpiece coming from Argentina!
An truly unique experience, the best horror film about demonic possession that I've seen in a very long time. Definitely recommend.
For some reason it feels like the film "Insidious" but that's a large understatement.
Surprisingly good... I wasn't expecting for this good script, the story is intringuing even though some characters make very stupid decisions more than once.
