Where Is Kyra? Reviews

If one gets a sense of being consumed by the film's crushing tone and impeccable sense of ambience, Dosunmu and Picoult deliver a dynamite third act climax.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 4, 2019

Dosunmu seems self-satisfied in securing the gloomy spirits, never excelling in fighting lethargy.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 1, 2019

A compelling, nuanced character study of an unemployed woman who once lived a comfortable life and now finds herself teetering dangerously close to the poverty line.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 21, 2018

As a star vehicle and a warning of the fragile economic uncertainty of a majority of people, Where Is Kyra works well.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 30, 2018

every frame is a tableau come to sumptuous life. And in Pfeiffer's face he's found the perfect vessel. Whole scenes play just on her face even when other actors are present in the scene. It's intimate yet unsettling because of the melancholic story.

| Original Score: B+ | Oct 21, 2018

A very brutal takedown of socioeconomic inequality and ageism, and how capitalist systems of power force otherwise upright citizens to take risks they otherwise wouldn't have to.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 12, 2018

Undeniably stirring and a welcome to return - if not quite a full return to form - for Pfeiffer.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 13, 2018

The experimental skills at display allow Pfeiffer to give one of the best performances of her career. [Full Review in Spanish]

Although it's opening act suggests Michelle Pfeiffer going mumble-core, Where is Kyra? is actually a far more substantial work than initially suggested - even if it's debatable whether or not it would be as impactful with another actress in the lead.

| Apr 30, 2018

Isn't so much about Kyra's fling with criminal behavior as it is about a world in which a decent person can fall from safety to destitution in just a few weeks' time.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 27, 2018

Anchored around terrific performances from Pfeiffer and Kiefer Sutherland, Where is Kyra deserves to be applauded for everything it does right.

| Original Score: 73/100 | Apr 26, 2018

Where Is Kyra? is an unorthodox comeback vehicle for Pfeiffer-the film is truly a total bummer, the rare example of cinema that is both beautifully made and 100 percent joyless. But it remains noteworthy, and maybe even important...

"Where is Kyra?" is a small story - there's much about its main character that we'll never know - and a terribly sad one. But it's a remarkable showcase for Pfeiffer, who'll break your heart in every scene.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 25, 2018

... occasionally borders on pretentious, it crafts a powerful portrait of socioeconomic despair without turning heavy-handed.

| Apr 20, 2018

Watching Michelle Pfeiffer's enactment of this woman as a hyperaware and yet disempowered character urges me to more carefully observe this world of so many virtually invisible and needy individuals.

| Apr 17, 2018

Without much to work with, [Michelle] Pfeiffer, who subtly expresses inner turmoil on her face, gives the movie a credible, sympathetic, charismatic protagonist.

| Apr 13, 2018

A sort of Blue Jasmine by a director who actually understands how human beings behave, Where is Kyra? isn't an easy film to watch, but it's even harder to look away from.

| Apr 13, 2018

It will attract a hardy few hard-core art house fans (and lots of major awards voters).

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 12, 2018

Pfeiffer is good - she's always good, and raw, and effective - but watching her here is like seeing her under glass from a block away.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Apr 12, 2018

This woman may be lost to the world, but in Dosunmu's quietly shattering vision, she is also unexpectedly, triumphantly found.
