For anyone who has ever been kept awake at night wondering who’d win a fight between a zombie and a shark, Zombi 2 is probably the movie for you. The same would apply to anyone who has ever wondered if Mia Farrow has a younger sister who can’t act worth a lick. Set on a remote Caribbean island that, not surprisingly, has been overrun by the living dead, Zombi 2, directed by low-budget Italian director Lucio Fulci, will also appeal to anyone interested in graphic zombie gore and a sprinkling of gratuitous nudity. However, those with an aversion to the aforementioned gore, bad acting/dubbing, and a plot that moves at a zombie’s pace should probably keep their distance.

A definite must see for every horror fan and one of the best zombie movies ever made. Absolutly TERRIFIC atmosphere, visuals and specially the makeup, effects and absolutly fire soundtrack by Fabio Frizzi. Some of the best gore you will ever see and the movie is short, sweet, and fast paced. The only thing that might get in your way is how situationally dumb the characters are, which is honestly worse than if they were dumb all the time.

1/4 Caribbean island hosts undead who stalk group who arrive. Extremely gratuitous bloodshed tries hard ripping off George Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD; offensively violent and depressing, but without any of the master's wit or subtilty. Weird Fabio Frizzi score is only advantage.

As Italian copyright laws tend to be more of a suggestion than anything else, you often end up with unrelated sequels to seemingly everything under the sun, case in point with Zombi 2, an unofficial sequel to Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Famously hated by the British government, often dubbed a video nasty, the film is a gut-munching, shark wrestling, eye-gouging orgy of topless skin divers, mud-caked undead terror and Italian splatter from the dark imagination of Lucio Fulci, a filmmaking I was utterly unfamiliar with until today. Say what you will about its simple narrative, but the ever-rising tension, and potent cinematography from Sergio Salvati and Fulci's direction strikes the right balance between sublimely creepy and promisingly gruesome. It's not without a set of ridiculous, grind-house elements including lousy acting, uneven pacing and some truly awful dialogue, yes, the film is shamelessly trashy but all the better for it. Aching a nauseating sort of brilliance and filled with lasting iconic imagery, gruesome special effects and a haunting, eerie score from Giorgio Cascio with enough worm-ridden zombie flesh and completely superfluous female nudity to make Fulci's Zombi 2 a winner.

Tras haber realizado su famoso thriller Sette Note In Nero y el western Sella D'Argento, Lucio Fulci comenzó su carrera en el cine de terror con esta película. Sus películas anteriores que pertenecen al giallo son erróneamente catalogadas como películas de horror, pero eso es porque contienen elementos que Fulci comenzaría a exprimir bastante en sus filmes de horror. Empezó a hacer eso todo eso partir de esta película. Zombie fue una de las muchas películas italianas que se hicieron con la intención de ser vendidas como secuelas de películas famosas. Como muchas de ellas, Zombie fue hecha con un presupuesto bajo. Lo que hace a Zombie diferente a esos otros mockbusters italianos es que es definitivamente la mejor película mockbuster que se haya hecho. En Italia fue vendida y promocionada como una secuela de Zombie: Dawn Of The Dead que fue dirigida por George A. Romero con la participación de Dario Argento. En vez de ser una réplica de la película de Romero como muchos mockbusters han hecho con otras películas, Fulci prefirió ser más original. Fue una sabia decisión porque Zombie logra ser una estupenda película de zombis a pesar de tener algunos fallos debido al bajo presupuesto. Hay una diferencia bastante grande entre los zombis de esta película y los zombis de Romero. Fulci aplico la regla de que los zombis pueden morir si se les destruye el cerebro, pero parece que también pueden morir si se les dispara en el corazón. Eso se puede deducir por las pocas escenas donde los zombis caen tras recibir un disparo en el pecho cerca del corazón. Aquí Fulci retoma la mitología de los zombis según las creencias vinculadas al vudú. Los zombis de esta película son bastante cercanos a sus versiones tradicionales de dichas creencias. Aquí Fulci no quiso hacer una película de zombis con una crítica social como hizo Romero, sino hacer una película de zombis según la tradicional creencia del vudú. Mientras los zombis de Romero lucen pálidos, en esta película ellos lucen más cadavéricos. El maquillaje de Giannetto De Rossi ofrece un diseño bastante artesanal de los zombis. Además, la película ofrece buenas escenas gores haciendo ver que superó aprovechar el poco dinero utilizado para la película. Otra diferencia notable es que los zombis no atacan a sus víctimas para comérselas mayormente. Solo en una escena se puede ver eso, ya que mayormente los zombis atacan a sus víctimas más bien para infectarlos. La película no da una explicación muy clara sobre como ha surgido la plaga que convierte a los habitantes de Matool en zombis, pero el solo hecho de mencionar la magia vudú basta para entender que se trata de un fenómeno sobrenatural. Lo que también llama la atención es que la mayoría de los zombis deambulan con los ojos cerrados y solamente se pueden ver a 2 o 3 con los ojos abiertos. Aunque la película se enfrentó a problemas legales por haber sido promocionada como una secuela de Zombie: Dawn Of The Dead, la película no actúa exactamente como una secuela de la obra de Romero. Más bien se siente como una precuela debido a que la historia parece narrar el origen de la plaga zombi y como esta llego a zonas urbanas. Se puede decir que logra ser una buena precuela o una buena película de zombis derivada. La entendió eso y puede que algunos no, pero ya sea por el marketing, la película termino siendo un gran éxito en Italia. Claro que los años pasaron y mientras Fulci mejoraba sus técnicas en sus siguientes películas, más se podía notar algunas fallas que hay en Zombie. Una de las escenas memorables es la del un zombi enfrentándose a un tiburón, pero por lo absurda que es. Además, se puede ver como el zombi muerde al tiburón, pero después de eso, el tiburón no aparece con heridas. Se puede entender que aún no era posible presentar a un tiburón herido por el presupuesto y la limitación de los efectos especiales. En la confrontación final se puede notar que usaron 3 veces una misma escena. Pese a todo eso, la película termina siendo igual de buena. También cuenta con una buena banda sonora por parte de Fabio Frizzi y el tema musical de la película es la mejor composición que Frizzi ha hecho. Zombie puede no ser diferente de otras películas de zombis, pero se ha ganado una buena reputación como clásico de culto y fue un muy buen comienzo para Fulci en el cine de terror. Esta película es un buen ejemplo de secuela independiente con originalidad que otros mockbusters italianos no han sido capaces de hacer en su mayoría. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 9/10.

Greatest zombie-themed horror film of all time.

Great effects, makeup and gore for 1979 but the plot is extremely thin and non-engaging.

There are so many varying opinions on the splatter-horror films delivered by Italian director Lucio Fulci. A lot of those opinions seem to agree that his work is of the love-it-or-hate-it variety. Personally, I find that most of them land with a frustrating Meh. Sure, the gore is usually entertaining over-the-top. But it's uneven from movie to movie, and sometimes from scene to scene in the same movie. ZOMBIE is regarded by most horror fiends as Fulci's masterpiece. I neither hated it nor loved it. Decent pacing, passable acting, and a few brilliantly horrific set pieces made it worth sitting through once. When the shots linger on the gorier bits it felt like it was trying too hard to shock and offend rather than horrify. I will say that the dubbing in this one is much less annoying than it is in a lot of other Italian horror movies, and I genuinely enjoyed Tisa Farrow's performance. But instead of concerning themselves with simply cashing in on George Romeo's masterpiece by upping the barf-o-meter, maybe they should have taken a page from his book and focused more on character and social comment.

Arguably Italy's greatest undead feature

Those Spanish conquistadores were buried in awfully shallow graves and are certainly looking fresh. When you hear about an unauthorized, foreign-language sequel to the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead (that was only greenlit because Italian law grants carte blanche regarding sequels to basically anything), you assume that Zombi 2 is going to be pretty cheap and inconsistent, a quick cash grab meant to hang on to fading hype. However, this film from Lucio Fulci takes full advantage of the director's reputation as the 'Godfather of Gore', using buckets of blood and plenty of creativity to design a wealth of unique zombie kills, from execution via headstone to THAT wood splinter shot that is patently guaranteed to make even the most stalwart horror fan at least wince. Light on narrative but differentiating itself through the design of its practical effects and tearaway facial prosthetics, Zombi 2 might lack the thematic heft of Romero's 'preceding' film but has plenty for genre fans looking for a bloodier take on the shamblers. Plus, underwater zombie/shark fight. (3.5/5)

The best zombie film ever....

Up there as one of the best Zombie films of its time, iconic scenes and a superb Fabio Frizzi soundtrack.

An abandoned boat sails into NY - only for a zombie to emerge! These are Fulci's zombies, rotting as they move, and Giallo blood - bright red and spurting! Two Brit actors as male leads add a surprisingly debonair edge. Zombieism is a disease from a cursed tropical island. Cool score, interesting camerawork at voyeur moments - but Fulci doesn't seem to know what he wants to say. But, hey - Zombie vs Shark!

As a kid, this was the absolute forbidden treasure. Seeing it later did not disappoint. It is exactly what you'd expect and more at times. Even the title is so legit it kills.

Lucio Fulci's zombie is definitely a gore fest horror film the plot and the story didn't make sense but I gave 5/5 because it's gory strange and iconic moments including Fabrio Frizzi's amazing musical chilling score.

Lucio Fulci's Zombie is a true zombie masterpiece and yes it's a rip off of Romeo's zombie films but this is a complete different zombie horror film and the make-up gore effects are very unique and the musical score it's very spooky atmosphere horror film and there's shark battle scene.

The zombie gore was good, which is problably why you come to watch this movie, but in between the zombie kills, the acting is terrible & the story drags badly & becomes tedious. Still not sure what to think about that whole zombie vs shark scene.

I understand why gore hounds dig this move. There are some ridiculously brutal scenes in it, but it does not make up for the overall dreadful pacing of the film. Despite having a somewhat interesting premise, a cool location and impressive effects for the time, the slow pacing and terrible acting really hold the film back. Worth a watch for hard core horror fans but the average movie goer should steer clear.

This movie may be far from Oscar award winning gold but it's a fun flick for gorehounds and old school Italian horror.

Lucio Fulci's 'Zombie' (aka 'Zombi 2') is one of those horror films that gets better each time you watch it, and it leads to a great, gruesome climax that delivers the splatter that a Fulci film promises. While it does get a little dull between the action sometimes, the gore, the zombie effects, and a pretty badass Richard Johnson make it all worth it.
