The Studio: Season 1 Reviews

The Studio is a perfectly engaging, even a frequently entertaining, television show that makes the viewer neither think too much nor laugh too hard.

Like most Rogen projects, “The Studio” is proudly potty-mouthed but ultimately toothless. One gets the feeling that the actor-producer is too ensconced in the system to truly go for broke.

While the show's of-the-moment references let movie buffs feel let in on the show's in-joke, they make The Studio as perishable as a fresh banana. Its references will all be passé in two months.

Surprisingly entertaining.

Some episodes of "The Studio" are stronger than others. So far, most of the characters could use more development. But the hectic style...fits the harried hero. And when the show's satire is on, it's on.

I found The Studio to be too clever by half and way too insider to play in Des Moines. Rogan is engaging as a lead, putting on his producer’s hat to tell that side of the story, but, in the end, the series is short on identifiable or likable characters.

"The Studio" deserves a little time (something, ironically, studio heads aren't willing to offer). It's bursting with ideas initially but once it leans into to specifics it becomes the series you may just want to embrace.

Es todo lo que nunca fue 'The Franchise'. No sé si la serie de HBO fue lo que quería ser, pero desde luego no lo que yo esperaba que fuera. Una gran sátira de la industria del cine; entretenida, cinemática y a veces melancólica.

Keep an eye on The Studio, which is already positioning itself as a strong contender to challenge Hacks at the awards. [Full review in Spanish]

If you’ve been waiting for the heir to Veep that The Franchise, from the same creator (Armando Iannucci), somehow wasn’t: it’s here.

The stakes are higher than other recent industry satires because meaningful art is bumping up against the broken film industry.

The enjoyment level will entirety depend on your tolerance level of Rogen’s repetitive acting style.

Shrewd and often as provocative as it is funny, The Studio is a critique that targets the system more than the people who operate it. [Full review in Spanish]

The Studio is underpinned by a tangible sense of love and wonder for Hollywood, a sense that every movie is a miracle and to get to make movies, even in an imperfect system, is a wonderful thing in and of itself.

| Apr 8, 2025

Its delicious snack-sized, self-contained weekly episodes clock in around the 30-minute mark, and that’s a big part of the show’s appeal.

Dear God, how much did this cost? Apple isn’t saying, but if this is “old” Hollywood’s last hurrah, it is going out in style.

...The Studio stands out as one of the essential comedy series of 2025 that will delight movie buffs. [Full review in Spanish]

The Studio is no hatchet job; a palpable love of the world it’s poking fun at shines through in every scene.
