Death Wish Reviews

The wildly miscalculated release of this film is only matched by its mindless aggression.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Mar 14, 2022

A morose and uneventful by-the-numbers remake that doesn't go nearly as far as it needs to.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Dec 29, 2021

The good news: Despite all the worries that this would be nothing more than an alt-right wet dream in which Bruce Willis guns down scores of blacks and Muslims, the film is actually restrained in such matters. The bad news: It still isn't very good.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 10, 2021

Will provide ammunition for discussion, so that's something. Gun violence has been a hot button topic when the first movie came out in 1974. It still is, but the conversation has changed.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 4, 2021

Director Eli Roth's penchant for torture-porn violence tends to generate unintended sympathy for the villains who get what's coming.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Dec 5, 2020

The concepts, struggles, and ideologies here aren't exaggerated. They're refracted, the film absentmindedly chasing its own tail while the world evolves around it.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 23, 2020

I don't know if this will stir debate and thoughtful think pieces, or if it's gas being tossed on top of an already raging fire.

Death Wish takes the original Charles Bronson film and updates it for today. Unfortunately, like most modern remakes of down and dirty movies of the 1970s, it feels so watered down.

Death Wish is far from an outright terrible movie. But the film comes across with a severe case of split personality, and while I'm usually fond of movies that dance from one tone to another to keep us on our toes, it doesn't work as well here.

| Jun 2, 2020

I certainly wasn't blown away by it, but it really is a lot of fun.

| Mar 23, 2020

The street violence is staged with such disgusting levity that any attempt at thematic complexity seems purely for show.

| Mar 9, 2020

Death Wish isn't unwatchable, but it is dreadfully boring to an almost insulting extent. The film caters to obvious action thriller and revenge film stereotypes. It lacks stimulation of any kind and is the most generic vengeance imaginable.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 2, 2019

The problem is that the film is more than its good performances, and in everything else it floats more or less strikingly. [Full Review in Spanish]

| Jul 24, 2019

Its tons of clichés, the shortcomings of its script and a somewhat vague direction by Roth make the film very far from being outstanding. [Full Review in Spanish]

| Jul 24, 2019

Feels like the wrong movie in the wrong time, a rote and needless remake where even its star seems bored, sleepwalking from one gleeful act of brutality to another.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 3, 2019

Despite being like tons of other movies, it's a fun one-time action thrill ride with a protagonist whose pain you understand.

| Original Score: B- | May 22, 2019

Too many issues with this movie on almost every level for me to recommend.

| Apr 25, 2019

Eli Roth has proven consistently that he has a pretty loosey-goosey understanding of human nature, let alone basic cinematic grammar.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 21, 2019

Death Wish was a movie. It had some quality Roth-style gore, including some pretty creative use of battery acid, but that's about all I can really say.

| Mar 2, 2019

The notion of an affluent white man taking to the streets with a gun to exact some sort of self-styled justice was a bit troublesome even 40 years ago, but in today's climate, it's downright unsettling.
