Death Wish Reviews

Feb 21, 2025

Wasnt sure if this film would hit or not because most down and dirty violent remakes from 70s films are often watered down and lacking and this one fits that bill, even with torture loving Eli Roth at the helm directing his film falls flat. Im a bigger fan of Eli Roth then his decision to cast Bruce Willis in Charles Bronsons part. That is probably my biggest issue with this film is his flat and almost boring portrayal of Bronsons character that wished death on as many scum bags before he went put himself as possible...hence the title. Willis doesnt bring that here. Its more about vengance for the act itself and im not certain the film should be about the act itself rather then the characters unraveling into a place where he doesnt care if he lives or dies and just wants ti take as many low lifes as possible with him...I cant say id recommend this film but I cant say stay away either. Vincent D'Onofrio is the gem as the leads brother. It seems hes great in everything he does. If you liked the original its worth a watch just to appreciate the original even more.

Unfortunately the professional critics watch so many movies that their palates become jaded and they can’t recognise a decent thriller when they see one. That’s what this film is : a very decent thriller that held my attention to the end.

It lacks the grittiness and over the top violence of the original, and doesn't do justice to Eli Roth's reputation. Decent action movie, but unfortunately nothing special.

This movie makes the worst mistake a "Death Wish" movie can make: they try to make the movie about something. Understand, "Death Wish" was at its best when it was just a cinematic video game. In "Death Wish 3" 126 people are killed. In this movie, Willis doesn't do any "Death Wishing" until over 40 minutes into the film. When the movie tries to bring in some real-world talk about gun violence and vigilante justice, it does not fit into this story. The same movie where a YouTube video about showing a man murder 2 people goes viral. But on the positive side, the movie has a good supporting cast. Bruce Willis might just be going through the motions, but everyone else is here to play. Eli Roth's odd comedy senses still shine through in a few scenes. I just Death Wish this was more fun.

Not a bad reboot but not the greatest either.

This movie starts out slow but is worth the wait. The story does a good job of displaying how vulnerable the main character is before traumatic events change his character and make him do things he's never dared before. Sometimes Bruce Willis's acting can't be helped due to his age and physical health, but the good special effects make up for a lot of it. Excellent action thriller.

It's a hollow, very easy-to-predict revenge action flick, with a pretty poor script

Daughter and wife become victims of robbery. Paul Kersey, as a husband and father, cannot accept the impunity of criminals, so he decides to take matters into his own hands. The film is quite good.

10/10 on engagement, story, and honestly, everything. I do not understand the bad ratings.

Just a friendly reminder to not remake classic films.

Another bad retelling worse than the others.

Based on the 1974 film, Death Wish stars Bruce Willis as a surgeon-turned-vigilante looking to avenge/protect his wife and daughter after a brutal burglary. It was directed by Eli Roth and didn't make much of a dent at the box-office upon its release. Although there is always a market for revenge movies, even if those basically tell the exact same story every time, Death Wish still feels like an oddly timed reboot. From the trailers, there didn't seem to be anything all that new or special about this particular retelling. That said, a director like Eli Roth might have been able to introduce a schlocky quality to things, thereby making the film a bit more fun so there was always that chance. Indeed, the film tries some different things here and there, though it remains bogged down by the uninspired premise throughout. We are quickly introduced to Dr. Paul Kersey's (Willis) family and given enough time to enjoy their company before the bad stuff happens. Paul is initially portrayed as a pretty nice guy who doesn't jump into needless confrontations. When his wife is killed and his daughter is seriously hurt then hospitalized, he goes on a revenge mission, learning about guns on the internet along the way. Because, as we all know, there's nothing more entertaining than seeing someone watch YouTube videos.. This is a much dumber movie than it should have been or, dare I say, could have been? There were a couple of ways to go in order to make this an engaging reimagining and the film attempts both, without any real commitment or consistency, making it a bit of a bumpy ride. Approaching this in a serious, gritty way à la Edge Of Darkness or Death Sentence could have been one way to go but Eli Roth only goes there very briefly, when he needs some kind of dramatic moment. You can tell he really wants to go full Grindhouse with this but he stops short of that as well so you end up with an uneven, partly-serious, partly-ridiculous shoulder shrug of a movie when, had it picked a tone, it could have been so much more. The bad guy death scenes are straight out of a cartoon between the Home Alone-style blunders and the goofy gore effects but nothing else in the movie stands out. Bruce Willis gives a reliably not-that-interested performance and the likes of Elisabeth Shue and Vincent D'Onofrio aren't given particularly meaty roles to sink their teeth into. This new Death Wish may not be the worst revenge movie out there but it's certainly not very good. It manages to be watchable but falls flat in every respect. You can tell there's a much better film in there somewhere and, incidentally, it's also called Death Wish. Passable.
