DogMan Reviews
Despite a terrific lead turn from Caleb Landry Jones, Luc Besson’s stylish drama/thriller Dogman just isn’t original enough to be memorable.

A baroque comicstrip superhero who is also a supervillain, 'Dogman' is a beast that does not know or respect norms, genres or styles. [Full review in Spanish]

What was supposed to be a return to form results in a whim as subtle as a sandwich made out of bottlecaps. [Full review in Spanish]

Dogman is a fable from start to finish, and that is how it should be seen if you want to enjoy it. [Full review in Spanish]

The script doesn't want to go anywhere when it tells the story of a life between absurdity and excessive sorrow that, sadly, only comes to fruition thanks to the incredible performance of its protagonist. [Full review in Spanish]

First class, crazy, extravagant entertainment. [Full review in Spanish]

I admire the obstinate absurdity of “DogMan,” which almost seems designed on purpose to be barely watchable.

It's a superficial film, that's nevertheless entertaining, well-crafted and well-acted.

This is the perfect movie for those days you’re convinced that dogs are better than people—even if that’s every day.

While I can appreciate the ambition and uniqueness, the film tried to merge too many genres. I didn't feel like I got enough of any one part to be satisfied.

Here’s the best way I can summarize this movie: Caleb Landry Jones stars as Douglas, a hyper-religious, Shakespeare-obsessed guy in a wheelchair who can communicate with dogs and also does drag and fights gangs. You’re either already sold, or you’re out.

[Caleb Landry Jones] is astounding in this role, so you sit there completely engaged in this film where there is not a single believable moment in it.

I wouldn't recommend watching DogMan for its half-baked rumination on god or forgiveness... But I would recommend watching this if you are curious to see how far Caleb Landry Jones is willing to go.

Kind of an idiotic movie built on a ludicrous premise. But Caleb Landry Jones puts in an interesting performance here, inhabiting an odd space that hovers between a hard-earned state of grace and quiet menace. His singular talent keeps a viewer invested.

A charismatic pack of well-trained canines almost come to the rescue of Luc Besson's crime thriller 'Dogman.'
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 4, 2024
Dogman is somehow a whopper that lacks any saving irony or magic, though its sheer oddity will no doubt win some defenders.

One of Luc Besson's more unusual movies, this thriller is sometimes preposterous but even more frequently thrilling; it's even touching, thanks to its gentle, terribly wounded central performance.

Comforting to know that this type flight of fancy can see the light of screen, not because it’s based in any reality, but because it emphasizes the backlash to the pain of abuse and the survival of the victims. And dogs! Love what is possible in film!

Woof.

A fully committed portrayal by Caleb Landry Jones brings emotional depth and moral complexity to this otherwise muddled character study.
